As a transgender man, I have strong connections to the Queer community, and a personal understanding of the ways that shame and discrimination can impact the ways we see ourselves.
I am a social worker and family therapist with over eight years post-qualifying experience, and over five years experience providing supervision and consultation to frontline practitioners and leaders in mental health, AoD, family violence and housing and homelessness sectors. I offer compassionate and non-judgemental services to people in Melbourne who have been impacted by the war on people who use drugs, the criminalisation of sex work, incarceration, and other forms of marginalisation.

Many clients come to me because they are not at ease with their emotional make up or simply not comfortable in their own skin.
I can understand that for many taking those first steps to seek professional help it can be quite daunting. I am mindful of the need therefore to set people at ease from the outset. I accommodate what differing clients are looking for from a psychologist ranging from finding solutions and learning strategies to process-oriented approaches that provide the opportunity to safely explore, understand, and heal the emotional pain that often underlies psychological stress and problematic behaviour.

Thinking about therapy or changing therapist is a huge first step. So well done for even beginning to look into it. I support people experiencing, low mood, poor motivation, withdrawing from others, loss of joy and interest in things, worries and racing thoughts. I also help with intrusive thoughts and memories about challenging experiences from the past. The medical language for these things include: Anxiety, depression, trauma or PTSD but you don't need a formal diagnosis to work towards feeling better.

Hi, my name is Josh. I specialise in working with clients with trauma (C/PTSD), anxiety, depression and chronic conditions by facilitating Body-Mind Processing practices. I use Buddhist Psychotherapy as my therapeutic framework. Buddhist Psychotherapy is a non-religious, brain science-focused and compassion-oriented framework, which can combine evidence-based counselling methods with body-mind integrative practices for a restored sense of wellbeing. My practice focuses on the body’s innate wisdom to work out solutions to the presented issues, as well as working with emotions as the vehicles to connect body-and-mind.

If you're hoping to feel safe, loved, and accepted in your relationship or friendships, but you can never find people who make you feel this or you never give them the chance to do so, you likely have an attachment issue. I specialise in working with insecure attachment styles, working to help clients find security in a relationship for the first time and to develop a healthier, kinder view of themselves.

I have 20+ years of experience: clinical counselling, managing clinical teams, professional supervision & training, developing new programs; & highly experienced with the very popular telehealth format.
So many concerns come from overthinking & believing what we think too often. So many concerns come from overthinking & believing what we think too often. Circumstances can be challenging/overwhelming. We can become depressed/anxious, which can affect relationships; especially after recent/past traumatic experiences, or distressing/unsupportive family relationships, which can negatively affect our ability to cope, & our view of ourselves & our place in the world. Mindfulness-based cognitive behaviour therapy (ACT/CBT/Schema Therapy/MET) can effectively address unhelpful patterns of thinking & behaviour.

More specifically, I have a particular interest in working with men, as well as veterans from the armed forces, and the unique challenges they face following military service.
In my work with clients, I prize the relationship we share as the vehicle through which treatment and change occurs. Through this relationship, we endeavour for therapy to be a space whereby a collaborative understanding of what has brought them to this point in life may be developed. Indeed, I believe that it is from this place that we may then work to develop a pathway forward to treat what is present, foster and deepen insight, and muster compassion to hold the fullness and uniqueness of each individual with deep appreciation and care.

Many clients have trouble finding the right psychologist.
I work with a variety of people including those suffering depression and anxiety, PTSD and complex trauma, personality disorders including borderline personality disorder, as well as dissociative disorders and complex mood conditions. I also work frequently with OCD and sexual addictions/disorders. My approach is holistic and focused on identifying your needs and goals, and how we can best achieve these together. I am a clinical psychologist and focus strongly on the assessment process - I believe it's important to establish exactly what may be happening so that we are on the same page. Treatment is always tailored to the individual

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
