Dr Lisa Milne
Psychologist, PhD, PsyBA - Clin. Psych
Brunswick East, VIC 3057
I work primary with women and non-binary people, adults and children
You may feel anxious, flat, or stuck in patterns that keep repeating despite trying to “do the right things.” Perhaps you function well outwardly but feel unsettled inside — in relationships, around identity, neurodivergence, food, body, or your sense of self — and want space to explore this more deeply. I can conduct ASD and ADHD assessments.

I work with warmth and curiosity to help develop a deeper understanding of your concern and make sense of why particular patterns might be causing distress. I work from an understanding that many of life's concerns stem from our past experiences in relationships and the structural difficulties that are present in our society. I endeavor to understand peoples experience and distress through the context in which they live. I believe that the more we can understand the fixed patterns we find ourselves stuck in, the greater chance we have of learning to live in more meaningful ways. I offer supervision, individual and couples therapy.

I work systemically with children (9+), young people, families and adults, with attention to the broader social and relational contexts shaping wellbeing.
I’m a psychotherapist who works with people who find that the past or ongoing stress continues to affect their lives, relationships, wellbeing, or ability to relax and be fully in life. We can develop ways of coping and protecting ourselves that were once important, but may later leave us feeling stuck, disconnected or anxious. I work with sensitivity and compassion, bringing gentle awareness to the patterns underlying present difficulties, allowing change to emerge naturally. Therapy at your pace can support greater inner security, vitality, connection and freedom in how you relate to yourself and others.

If you’re a professional struggling with anxiety, perfectionism, relationship difficulties, or self-doubt, you may feel like you should have it all together. Outwardly, you appear capable and successful, but internally, stress and overthinking make it difficult to enjoy your work, relationships, or even your downtime. You might find yourself avoiding difficult conversations, procrastinating on important tasks, or overworking to keep anxiety at bay. Despite your efforts, you may feel stuck, wondering why stress and self-doubt persist.

I have training with adolescents and adults at community and private settings.
Do you find yourself overthinking, feeling guilty when you try to set boundaries, or caught in repeating patterns that leave you feeling drained and burnt out? I work with young women who are highly self-aware, yet still find it hard to break out of these cycles. It can feel confusing and frustrating, like insight alone isn’t enough to create change. I offer a warm, and safe space, where we can gently explore what’s beneath this and help you feel more grounded, clear, and able to show up in your life with more confidence and internal trust.

I offer psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. My practice provides a space where you can speak freely and without censorship to someone who will listen carefully to both the conscious and unconscious resonances of your speech. It offers a rare opportunity to seek a real understanding of the things you find most difficult and that cause you to suffer, but also those that are most important to you.

Psychotherapist, AASW

People often come to psychotherapy because they are burdened by thoughts, behaviours, feelings, or patterns of relating that make their lives difficult and cause them to suffer. In my psychoanalytic practice it is through speaking freely, and being listened to with careful attention, that people can find new possibilities with the difficulties and impasses that have characterised their lives so far. My approach does not impose norms of relating, functioning or being but meets each person, one by one, in their unique experience of living and in the context of their history and circumstances.

FAQ - About Adult Counselling
Why should adults see a therapist?
Adults may benefit from therapy for a wide range of reasons—whether it’s managing symptoms of a diagnosed mental health condition like anxiety or depression, navigating life transitions, coping with grief or trauma, or simply seeking support during a challenging life period. Many adults find that therapy helps them build healthier coping skills and better process their emotions, which may lead to better relationships and reduced stress. It’s important to note that, unlike psychiatrists or primary care physicians, therapists do not prescribe psychiatric medication. However, they will often work alongside prescribing clinicians to ensure coordinated care and can provide behavioural therapy as an important addition to psychiatric medication. Mental health concerns can look different in adulthood than in childhood or adolescence, so finding a therapist with expertise working with adult clients is important. Conditions like major depressive disorder (MDD), generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), bipolar disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for instance, may present or resurface differently in adulthood than in childhood or adolescence. Adult-specific stressors, such as job strain, caregiving responsibilities, relationship challenges, financial stress, or identity transitions, can also influence the onset and type of symptoms an individual experiences. Adult-focused therapists, therefore, are trained to understand these complexities and tailor care accordingly.

How do I know if a therapist is the right fit for me?
When seeking care, it’s important to understand a therapist’s treatment specialties and their overall approach to treatment . Some therapists focus on common adult conditions like anxiety or depression, while others specialize in areas such as trauma, substance use disorders, or obsessive-compulsive disorder. It’s also important to consider a therapist’s training when seeking care. Therapists in Australia hold various credentials depending on their training. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are registered with the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) or the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) and their qualifications and practice are overseen by these professional organisations. Psychologists must be registered with the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA) and have professional designations such as Clinical Psychologist, General Psychologist, or Counselling Psychologist. All of these professionals can provide talk therapy but do not prescribe medication. When searching for a therapist, consider their credentials and training background to ensure a good fit.

How do I find a therapist who sees adults?
Psychology Today’s online directory allows you to search specifically for therapists who work with adults. Each provider profile includes key information such as clinical specialties, therapeutic approaches, licensure, accepted insurance plans, languages spoken, and session fees. Reviewing these details can help you determine whether a particular provider aligns with your needs and can indicate whether they are a good match for adult clients.
