I work with clients who feel stuck in repeated patterns in how they relate to others. This might include noticing the same kinds of dynamics or conflicts showing up across different relationships (not just with partners). I also work with people adjusting to life following critical illness or injury. I have a particular interest in psychological adjustment following hospitalisation, including intensive care (ICU), and its impact on patients and those close to them. I am registered with the TAC. I also see people struggling with depression, anxiety, stress, grief and loss, burnout, perfectionism, and adjusting to change.

You may be seeking support through individual therapy or by joining a small supportive group where you can feel safe, understood, and accepted. For some, this includes healing from trauma related to sexual violence, incest, or other forms of sexual, physical, or psychological abuse, which may still shape how safe the world and relationships feel. You may also be neurodivergent—living with ADHD, autism, OCD, or dyslexia—or navigating anxiety, depression, or bipolar disorder and feeling misunderstood or exhausted from trying to meet expectations that do not align with who you truly are and needing a safe and confidential place.

I create a safe and open space for my clients to therapeutically explore their issues, challenges and concerns. My ideal client is someone who is open to exploring the connections between their trauma and life experiences and how this has impacted their lives in positive and negative ways. I like to work with clients that are action and goal oriented, as I like to set homework tasks and brain training exercises to re-wire their thinking in a healthier and more functional way. I am very conversational and my clients like this approach to discussing areas of concern to them.

My counselling style is gentle and collaborative with the ability to create rapport quickly – I intend to create a safe, supportive and affirming place where the counselling work is empowering and enriching. I use a person-centred and trauma-informed cognitive behavioural approach in my work, which also includes EMDR and elements of ACT, DBT, Schema and psychodynamic therapies. I see my work as a real honour to work with people, quite often at their most vulnerable, and I really value the time I spend with my clients as we explore and collaborate on our therapy experience together.

All people of all ages can experience difficult times in their life. These may have been caused by an event that has caused distress, issues with family, friendships, relationships, the work place, health issues and countless other situations. Sometimes events have happened long ago and continue to trouble us and impact our life, or the situation may be more recent. It can be difficult to share what is happening. Often we don't want to burden or worry those who care for us; or we may feel uncomfortable talking to people we know. Counselling provides support toward finding resolutions and living life in the best way possible.

Chronic Pain Therapists
How does chronic pain therapy work?
Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?
Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophising, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?
Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
