Hi, I am Caralyn, a Bendigo-based therapeutic counsellor and coach. I truly believe everyone has their own unique capabilities and, with the right level of support, can achieve whatever is important to them through counselling. Guiding Steps is unique in approach incorporating coaching into the counselling plan to ensure the person has the right level of support to learn, implement and build skills they identify during their therapy sessions. I am passionate about tailoring the counselling support to the person’s needs and preferences. My motto is “support is person-first, person-directed and meaningful to them”.

Hi, I’m Melanie. You can call me Mel. I’m a counsellor, artist, educator and traverser of life paths less travelled. I work with people who feel out of step with the norm, who are not following the expected ‘life script’, and who want to embrace their uniqueness and craft an authentic and meaningful life - but feel stuck in making this happen. You don’t have to do this alone.

I am passionate about supporting people who have experienced trauma. I am a believer that trauma comes in all different shapes and sizes, and that counselling can support someone to ease the impacts of trauma and retake control of their lives. I enjoy working with people from all different stages of life to find a common ground of trust and support.

Do you experience the impact of past trauma in your day to day life? Do you experience flashbacks, nightmares, or are triggered by certain things associated with memories from events that happened in the past? I can help you to understand your autonomic nervous system and why you experience defensive reactions such as fight, flight and freeze in certain situations long after the traumatic event happened. I can help you to recognise when the triggers impact your nervous system and your reaction to them. We can work towards returning the trauma to the past where it belongs, and restore your felt sense of safety.

I have been privileged to meet people from all walks of life who have added so much value to both my personal and professional development. I have worked within the Community Services and Mental Health Services Sector now for approximately 21 years. Over this time, I have met and supported people living in nursing homes who were at their end stage of life, people with differing abilities, and individuals that are confined within the Victorian prison system. I have also facilitated men’s behaviour change programs for both mandated and non-mandated members, supporting them to understand the differences between abusive and non-abusive

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
