Many of us are striving to be the best person we can. Sometimes we lose connection with that person and the satisfying, and enriching, often preferred life seems out of reach or only for others. We can have this preferred life. It's possible! Sometimes experiences of trauma, adversity and pain form stories around us that recruit us into thinking we can't. Some stories can even invite actions we regret that can separate us from people we care about, even from who we would prefer to be. Examining these ideas and stories in therapy can free up new ways of thinking and living for more fulfilling and joyful lives.
Over 25 years of consulting with men, women and children I have noted how within stories of pain and adversity are often hidden stories of survival and hope. People have amazing hidden expertise in reconnecting with stories of competence and hope they use to reestablish a more fulfilling and preferred lives.
Speaking with people has taught me how we often strive for a more enriching life, personally fulfilling, where preferences and hopes are not only possible but actually felt by us, and people we care about. Therapy is a place to reimagine. It has been my privilege to witness so many transformative conversations where the once thought unhaveable becomes real.
