I have over 20 years working with teens and adults in providing direct care to disabled and able bodied adults as a carer and psychologist. I help people with a wide range of issues: Depression, Anxiety, Substance Use, Loss and Grief, PTSD, Work Cover (SIRA accredited), and Compulsory Third Party.
I use a range of therapies, but primarily use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) as it addresses the needs of the whole person. ACT does this by helping us to deliberately notice unwanted thoughts and feelings, and how much we ‘buy into’ them. We then see whether their attempts to control thoughts and feelings is working to build a life with meanining.
What I hear most from clients when we first meet is that they are struggling with all sorts of unhelpful thoughts and stuck in emotional and behavioural cycles they don’t want, and aren't working.
