Beth Rad - Tide Mill Therapy
Counsellor, MA, ACA-L3
1 Endorsed
Hobart, TAS 7000
I draw from EMDR, somatic and nervous system-informed approaches, ACT, mindfulness, EFT, creative interventions, and other experiential therapies.
I work with adults and couples experiencing trauma, anxiety, overwhelm, relationship difficulties, burnout, grief, and life transitions. Many of the people I support are carrying the impacts of complex trauma, difficult relationships, or long-standing patterns that no longer feel sustainable. People often reach out when they feel emotionally exhausted, disconnected from themselves, stuck in survival mode, or aware that something needs to change but unsure where to begin. My approach is collaborative, grounded, and paced with care.

Renee Valentino
Psychologist, MAPS
Hobart, TAS 7000
I work with adolescents and young adults experiencing emotional dysregulation, behavioural challenges, or safety concerns. Many are navigating mood instability, impulsivity, identity confusion, or relationship conflict. They often feel overwhelmed, stuck, or ashamed, and want to feel understood without judgment, gain more control over their emotions, and build lives that feel meaningful. I also support parents to strengthen their skills and confidence in these often exhausting and isolating experiences.

There are many reasons we may begin therapy; we may long for change or hope for opportunities for healing, growth and transformation. Whether there is a particular thing you are struggling with, a need for greater support, or an interest in deepening self-awareness, I can support you on your journey.

As a trauma-informed therapist, I draw on a range of evidence-based therapies including EMDR and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy to help reduce distress and improve your quality of life.
The couples that I work with initially describe themselves as feeling "stuck." This might be patterns of behaviours or relationships, feeling weighed down or overwhelmed by trauma, self-doubt, or disconnection from their emotions and body. Sometimes it is navigating the complexities of relationship challenges or neurodivergence. Most of the time what they truly want is to feel lighter, calmer, safer and more in control of their lives. Therapy offers a space to explore these needs and to move toward the life they imagine for themselves.

I combine several evidence-based therapy modalities to collaboratively create a treatment plan that is carefully tailored to the person’s neurotype, goals and capacity in terms of their available energy levels. If you have experienced the more traditional forms of therapy as neuro-normative and it did not quite resonate with you, please get in touch. I would love to hear from you.

Who is EMDR for?
EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?
People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?
First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?
First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimising its ability to trigger anxiety.
