Are you finding it hard to cope with day to day stressors. Do you have difficulty with food and body image, maybe you are restricting, binging, purging or yo-yo dieting. Have you found that your drug or alcohol intake has increased and is starting to feel out of control, or has been out of control for a while, have you just had a lapse/relapse. Is your anxiety holding you back or are you having difficulty with your relationships, emotion regulation or asserting boundaries?

Hi, I’m Nell. If we work together I will invite you to tune into the language of your body, in a way that feels safe for you, to encourage a more aligned version of yourself to emerge. You can expect that the process will always be collaborative, respectful, and curious. I invite you to ‘come as you are’ and I will meet you, without judgement. Showing up in therapy is an act of courage and I honour the vulnerability it takes to reach out.

When lingering or reoccurring issues arise they create within us a dissatisfaction about life and how we feel about ourselves. Issues such as relationship difficulties, addictions, career, life transitions, parenting, depression, anxiety, stress, body image, negative beliefs and thoughts, emotional overwhelm, aggression, low energy, impulsivity etc. can affect your self esteem and your ability to think clearly and solve problems effectively. Learning new skills, building on resilience and resources and dealing with past issues that affect your present life can be empowering and create satisfaction and fulfilment in your life.

I am a Clinical Psychologist with 13 years of experience. I am incredibly passionate about supporting women in all stages of their life, including fertility, pre-natal/postnatal period, first time mothers, empty nesters, retirees etc. I've also supported many people through their depression, grief and anxiety (social anxiety, generalised anxiety, panic, agoraphobia), especially those who are experiencing mental health issues for the first time. It can be frightening not knowing whether, what you're feeling is normal, and whether you would recover. Getting help early on, from experienced mental health professionals is very important.

Substance Use Counsellors

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counsellors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
