If you're considering therapy you're likely entertaining the possibility of change! Many clients have a sense of feeling 'stuck' - that what they've been doing isn't sustainable - old coping/survival strategies aren't workable and use up valuable energy, e.g.. avoidance of/distracting from/suppressing/whiteknuckling/ruminating on: thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations, urges, images, memories. These maintain negative cycles, keep our emotional brain vigilant to 'threat' and our nervous system mobilised in a stress response. What if we could imagine a future we'd like to participate in, regardless of what's showing up in the present?

Using a blend of approaches like schema therapy, DBT, and EMDR, I help you get to the root of long-standing patterns—especially the ones that leave you feeling stuck, not good enough, or overwhelmed.
I work with people who are juggling a lot—whether it's the lasting impact of childhood or past trauma, ongoing anxiety, or the day-to-day stress of parenting and relationships. You might be someone who tends to take on a lot, who strives to stay in control or meet high expectations, even when it feels exhausting. To others, you may appear outwardly successful but internally feel stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected. If you're looking for a space to better understand yourself, let go of unhelpful patterns, and move toward a more balanced and fulfilling life, we may be a good fit.

You know relationships are important. When they are not working out, the pain can be overwhelming. You feel stuck because as a trained helping professional you expect more of yourself and your partner. It is so difficult to even begin to consider getting help when you also work in health care or mental health! It is not like you are willing to see just anyone! You know the research tips to improve the relationship, but you just can't seem to apply them at home. That hurts! You understand it might have something to do with a difficult past or trauma but that does not help you to manage the conflict. You start to feel despairing.

I have over 30 years experience helping people and have been a consultant in charge of a major hospital Psychology Clinic. I have also worked in an Anxiety Disorder Clinic, and Family Therapy Clinic. This level of expertise allows for accurate diagnosis and personalised treatment. I employ practical, tested methods. When you are under stress it is easy to fall into the trap of thinking that you are powerless, and that this is just the way things are. You will start to believe, “I’m not as capable as I once was"

I tailor my treatment approach to suit the needs of my clients and depending on their needs can provide short-term treatment focusing on current problems (e.g. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), or longer-term treatments that focus on problems that are more persistent and relate to negative experiences from childhood (e.g. Schema Therapy or Dialectical Behaviour Therapy).
I enjoy working with clients of all ages and cultural backgrounds. I have a particular passion for treating trauma, however also enjoy assisting people in overcoming a range of issues including depression, anxiety, substance abuse, work and life stress and personality disorders. I believe in a strength based approach which focuses on helping people build their internal resilience and overcome their personal struggles.

It can be overwhelming and daunting to find a therapist who understands you, your story and your life. You don’t want the “cookie cutter”answers or quick fixes because it feeds into the dissatisfaction and feelings of being unheard.

Dialectical Behaviour (DBT) Therapists
Who is DBT for?
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?
The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behaviour and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?
Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behaviour, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?
Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioural change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behaviour; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
