Sometimes the problem isn't simply inside one person. It can live between us, in our relationships, families, histories and patterns that have developed over time. I work with individuals, couples and families who feel stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected or caught in difficulties that seem hard to shift. You may be navigating family or relationship conflict, trauma, grief, neurodivergence, parenting challenges or a major life transition. Sometimes you know exactly what's wrong; sometimes you simply know that something isn't working anymore. We can begin there.

I work with adults living with the longer-term effects of trauma, particularly childhood trauma and experiences that have shaped how you see yourself, other people and the world around you. You may have learnt that you were too much, not enough, or responsible for keeping everyone else okay. Perhaps you're anxious, constantly on edge, struggling with self-worth or relationships, or finding that past experiences still feel very present. You may be so used to looking after everyone else that you've lost touch with what you need. You might understand where these patterns came from, but still find yourself repeating them.

Welcome to Inbalance Therapies. I’m Ashley Barnard, a registered counsellor and psychotherapist and I work with people to restore balance. You may appear to be coping on the outside, but internally feel overwhelmed, anxious, disconnected or exhausted. You might understand your patterns, yet still find yourself reacting in ways you wish you wouldn’t. You may feel stuck in cycles of overthinking, emotional intensity, shutdown, or a constant sense of pressure. Often, this isn’t a lack of insight, it’s a nervous system that has been under prolonged stress.

I believe everyone can benefit from therapy - from seeking support for a life transition; to exploring and healing trauma; to identifying and optimizing your patterns for greater satisfaction in your day to day life and relationships. I became a therapist because I am genuinely curious and interested in people, getting to know each person's unique experiences, and supporting them to heal and thrive. I strive to create a safe and welcoming space where you can feel comfortable to be yourself; allowing you to explore, grow and heal.

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?
You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.
How does treatment for ADHD work?
Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioural therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.
How long does treatment for ADHD take?
It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
