I draw on my yoga and mindfulness qualifications to support people to adapt to their grief.
I am a specialist grief and bereavement counsellor. I support people to adapt to a significant change in their life following someone close dying. If you are experiencing grief and feel confused, stuck or overwhelmed reach out. Change can occur with empathic listening and reflective inquiry. Medicare Rebates apply with a GP referral. If you hold a white or gold card, sessions are available without cost with a GP referral under the DVA program. At present, this practice does not provide autism specific services, and individuals with ASD may benefit from seeking support from practitioners with dedicated expertise.

If you're considering therapy you're likely entertaining the possibility of change! Many clients have a sense of feeling 'stuck' - that what they've been doing isn't sustainable - old coping/survival strategies aren't workable and use up valuable energy, e.g.. avoidance of/distracting from/suppressing/whiteknuckling/ruminating on: thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations, urges, images, memories. These maintain negative cycles, keep our emotional brain vigilant to 'threat' and our nervous system mobilised in a stress response. What if we could imagine a future we'd like to participate in, regardless of what's showing up in the present?

Many of the people I work with are high achievers, dedicated professionals, or those in roles where they take care of others first—military and emergency personnel, healthcare workers, and community service professionals. I know how overwhelming it can feel when your mind won’t slow down—when overthinking, worry, or self-doubt make even simple decisions exhausting.

I incorporate mindfulness and reflective practices to support emotional regulation, insight, and steadier ways of relating.
Many of the people I work with are capable, thoughtful, and exhausted from holding it together for a long time. They live with anxiety, grief, the long aftermath of trauma, or the quiet disconnection that comes from years of carrying more than felt sustainable. Couples come looking for somewhere to put down the weight of recurring conflict, distance, or ruptures that have not healed on their own. Many have already had therapy that did not quite reach them. They want a practitioner whose understanding of what they are carrying does not stop at the textbook.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists
How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behaviour through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviours and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioural habits.
