Art Therapy connects in with the client’s feelings, emotions and the unconscious, that wouldn’t ordinarily be done solely through a counselling perspective.
While we are diverse in nature, our beliefs and ideals as we travel through life, we all go through emotional challenges. If where you are feels uncomfortable, that you feel challenged, stressed and possibly without direction or meaning I am able to guide you through those states. Where you unfold naturally your next best steps to take. You may have ailments that frustrate and inhibit your everyday living and live in fear that can often make no sense, however this can be gotten through. And where you feel empowered and worthy on your path in life.

By using techniques such as art and play therapy, social stories, and strength-based therapies, assists them to recognise and label their emotions, understand the triggers and learn skills for regulating their emotions.
Emotional regulation is a significant challenge for individuals with Autism and ADHD. Children with Autism and ADHD may struggle to identify, understand, and manage their emotions effectively, leading to difficulties in regulating their behavior and responses to various situations. As a therapist, I assist in facilitating understanding of their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors which is crucial in helping these individuals develop essential skills for emotional regulation.

Where possible, I also enjoy bringing art & creativity into session.
I am highly passionate about working with young people & my own queer community, including other gay men, gender diverse & HIV positive folk, as well as all people from minority groups or diverse cultural backgrounds, including neurodiverse folk & people with a disability. As members of marginalised populations, we often share that sense of shame (as well as pride!) that comes with not living up to the dominant culture's expectations of 'normal'. Queerphobia, racism, ableism, sexism, toxic masculinity, minority stress, micro-aggressions, internalised shame & identity concerns are often daily experiences for many of us.

I integrate a range of cognitive therapies with mindfulness practices & art therapies while also considering the impact of societal & family systems.
Navigating the world as a neurodivergent individual can be incredibly challenging, especially without adequate support. Autistic and ADHD individuals, LGBTQIA+ folks, and trauma survivors often face unique hurdles and higher rates of trauma and PTSD than the neurotypical population. Life can sometimes feel overwhelming, and dealing with sensory differences, executive functioning difficulties, and the pressures of masking can make it even tougher.

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioural therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
