Having spent a lifetime working or volunteering in the community sector, I have come to appreciate that every person walks a unique journey full of the trials and joys of life. At times there are unexpected traumas, confusing twists and turns and sometimes a complete stall, with no visible way forward. However everyone has inner strengths that can help them remain resilient, but sometimes those strengths are not realised. It is one of my passions to help people unlock those inner strengths, giving empowerment to find solutions that previously were unseen.

We specialise in helping young people work through challenging events;
anxiety
, stress, family and social concerns, depression, issues with identity, bullying, and trauma. I believe every young person is competent and capable and can experience success and that intelligence, personality, and character are continuously developed, and our true potential is unknowable. The counselling relationship is unique; it is special way of ‘being with’ another person to facilitate change so that they can feel better and discover new ways of thinking and behaving.

When struggling with the symptoms of depression,
anxiety
, grief & trauma & other issues, it is hard to gain perspective to understand your experience, your emotions, your problems and to see a way forward. These things can leave you feeling frustrated, exhausted and alone. It pays to speak with a mental health professional about your situation. I can provide the opportunity for you to share and make sense of your story in a safe environment where you will be heard & understood. After sharing your story we can work on specific goals and strategies to counter problems and promote more effective approaches.

'We don't get wounded alone and we don't heal alone' (Carl Jung). Psychological wounds regardless of how old there are can be very difficult to heal. They can manifest themselves as chronic pain, fatigue,
anxiety
and various mental health issues. They can make you feel stuck, disconnected, overwhelmed, or lost. If you are reading this, you are most likely looking for answers and you would like to make some changes. This is an important step in your journey and I would like to support you through it.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
