If you've tried therapy before and still feel stuck, that's likely not on you. It usually means the work hasn't reached the root of the problem yet.
I'm Helen Billows, a registered psychologist in Adelaide with a special interest in trauma, PTSD, complex trauma, and EMDR. I work with people who are exhausted by the ongoing impact of their history - the triggers, the shutdown, the patterns in relationships that keep repeating no matter how much they understand them logically.

Are you struggling with motivation, trying to make sense of a recent loss, or putting on a brave face while feeling far from okay inside? Maybe you're going through a tough life transition, and you're not sure how to think, feel, or if your experience is "normal"?
You don’t need the right words, a clear goal, or a crisis to be here. Therapy can start exactly where you are. Working with me feels more like a grounded conversation than a clinical process. Sessions are collaborative, unhurried, and focused on helping you understand what’s weighing on you, without pressure to fix yourself or move on before you’re ready.

Successful relationships are the basis of our well-being and good mental health. When relationships are stressed and conflicts start to escalate, the pain can be overwhelming. You are so busy every day helping others that you may feel like you haven’t enough to give to anyone at the day’s end. When your focus at work is helping others, it can feel even more lonely and distressing to feel disconnected at home with your partner. If you're finding that the same problems, the same arguments, aches and disappointments are on repeat mode, it's time to reach out for help.

You may be someone who feels things deeply and notices more than most people around you. On the outside you may appear capable and coping, yet internally feel anxious, overwhelmed, or drained from carrying more than you let on.
You might find yourself overthinking interactions, absorbing other people’s emotions, or struggling to set clear boundaries in relationships. Many of the people I work with are thoughtful, empathic, and often intuitive individuals who want to better understand themselves, feel calmer in their own nervous system, and develop a stronger sense of where they end and others begin.

If you're considering therapy you're likely entertaining the possibility of change! Many clients have a sense of feeling 'stuck' - that what they've been doing isn't sustainable - old coping/survival strategies aren't workable and use up valuable energy, e.g.. avoidance of/distracting from/suppressing/whiteknuckling/ruminating on: thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations, urges, images, memories. These maintain negative cycles, keep our emotional brain vigilant to 'threat' and our nervous system mobilised in a stress response. What if we could imagine a future we'd like to participate in, regardless of what's showing up in the present?

I work with people who have a range of problems, such as existential anxieties, general unhappiness in life, dissociation, recurrent disturbing memories from the past, as well as people who have clinical diagnoses such as PTSD, C-PTSD, personality disorder, anxiety disorder and depression.
I offer psychotherapy from a relational, psychodynamic perspective. This means I am interested in how past and present relationships, emotional experiences, and unconscious patterns shape the ways we think, feel, and relate to ourselves and others.
I am a psychiatrist with a Postgraduate Diploma in Adult Psychotherapy and training in EMDR.

Depression Therapists
What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.
What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.
What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.
Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.
How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
