Many of us are striving to be the person we hope to, admire, aspire to. There are times life seems satisfying, yet also times when something keeps getting in the way. We carry ideas about life and ourselves that can be enriching, yet at other times operate to make a preferred life seem out of reach, or only for others. These ideas come from experiences and can form a story of who we should be or can be. Ideas can invite actions we regret that can separate us from people we care about, even from who we would prefer to be. Examining these ideas and stories can free up new ways of thinking and living that support more fulfilling lifes

I've helped many people see their lives more clearly and be the person they want to be. What would you like to change? Is there something you feel is holding you back but you just can't figure out what or why? Sometimes you might just want someone to talk to that isn't a friend or family member to give you an independent insight to a problem. Whatever you are looking for, I can help you reframe what isn't working and give you a different perspective.

Men are often taught not to reach out for help. You may have been made to believe that to seek help for yourself was to admit weakness or that it would make you a burden. Maybe you don't know where to start. But you've been thinking about getting professional support for some time now, that's why you are here. You know you need help, maybe because you're experiencing social anxiety or an overwhelming difficulty to get out of bed. You might no longer enjoy the things that used to make you happy, or you're having darker, more intrusive thoughts. It's starting to impact your relationships, your work & your physical health.

I am highly passionate about working with young people & my own queer community, including other gay men, gender diverse & HIV positive folk, as well as all people from minority groups or diverse cultural backgrounds, including neurodiverse folk & people with a disability. As members of marginalised populations, we often share that sense of shame (as well as pride!) that comes with not living up to the dominant culture's expectations of 'normal'. Queerphobia, racism, ableism, sexism, toxic masculinity, minority stress, micro-aggressions, internalised shame & identity concerns are often daily experiences for many of us.

There are times we find ourselves experiencing low mood, anxiety and stress from life and the challenges it brings within our personal and relationships with others. Some of these challenges put us in a state of emotional dysregulation, numb from reality, overwhelmed with a mix of emotions that takes away the joy of the present moment and the future to come. I hope that we can work together to gain a deepened understanding of the challenges impacting you and your life and find practical ways to bring changes in your life.

Men's Issues Counsellors

Is therapy for men different than it is for women?

Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?

Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?

One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
