My work draws from psychodynamic approaches to the existential issues we face along the lifespan: navigating important life transitions (loss, breakup), stuckness in one's circumstances and relational patterns (attachment issues), persistent loneliness or isolation, disconnection from work or sense of vitality, creating a sense of meaning through adversity.
I take a collaborative to therapy, in which we work together to define a project to address the core concerns. I see a range of clinical issues: mood disturbance (depression, dysthymia) anxiety (generalised anxiety, excessive worry, panic) and entrenched problems arising from trauma (PTSD, grief, attachment issues), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). As a clinical psychologist I am trained in evidence-based therapies, including Cognitive Therapy (CBT), trauma therapy, and Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT). My past roles are as senior clinician in private & public mental health, and I provide supervision to psychologists.

My approach is integrative, grounded in a relational framework where we jointly set goals and develop a personalised plan tailored to your needs.
Human beings are awesome! However despite that we experience pain, hardship, suffering, grief and anxiety which can be tough. When we’re going through the tough stuff, it is helpful to have a companion that offers us a space for understanding and attending. In this space of understanding and attending something profound can happen, we get a sense of our humanity reflected to us, in a way that is warm, inviting and supports changes. These changes amplify our strength, creativity, and resilience. When we're hurting connecting to our hope for change is so powerful and healing. This is what I wish for you in your journey.

I work in a compassion-based, relational, somatic & holistic way towards growth.
With trauma or ongoing stress, survival energy becomes stuck in our nervous system. We might make adjustments, like seeking or avoiding certain types of situations, or clenching certain muscles to dodge tricky feelings or sensations. We believe this keeps us safe from what we fear, but we can also feel trapped in patterns that take a huge toll on our lives, health and relationships. My clients and I work together with sensitivity and compassion to discover ways to gently restore a sense of inner security, peace and passion for life.

Relational Counsellors

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioural or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioural therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
