EMDR and Hypnotherapy for quitting drinking, emotional eating and releasing trauma. Have you tried repeatedly to quit drinking alcohol or emotional eating and are now feeling defeated or stuck? You have likely been trying to fix a subconscious problem with conscious methods (willpower/ talk therapy), which doesn't usually work. If you have experienced trauma you may be unwittingly self-medicating to cope with emotional flashbacks by using alcohol, food or smoking. These problems may have effected your confidence or relationships.

Hi, I’m Derek, and I’m here to support you in processing life transitions. My clients often describe me as down-to-earth, non-judgmental, easy to talk to, and great at helping them work through challenges and find solutions. I work collaboratively with individuals to create personalised plans for healing and coping with difficult experiences. Many of the clients I support have experienced trauma, complex trauma, PTSD, loss or impending loss. Loss and grief often start with a diagnosis long before the person or animal leaves this earth. I’m really looking forward to the opportunity to work with you!

My experiential, bottom-up, attachment-based IFS-based therapy will help you recognise and transform the adaptations that were helpful responses to threats in the past but no longer serve you.
Having harsh inner critics, addictions, being afraid of rejection, needing to be perfect, feeling numb or anxious are all symptoms of trauma, not signs of weakness or personality flaws. Not disorders, but our minds' best effort to keep our heads above water. Trauma is often caused not by a single event, but by a mix of overwhelm and powerlessness over time. Removal of love, constant criticism, excessive expectations or parents who struggled with their issues when we were young led to adaptations necessary for our survival. If any of these resonate, you are not alone. I talk to people like you. And like them, you, too, can heal.

I empower single women who have struggled to find security in relationships to transform from feeling insecure, lost, and hopeless to becoming confident, eager to date, and excited about the future. With a history of failed relationships, experiences of abuse, and anxieties about what lies ahead, they often lack self-assurance and find themselves stuck in toxic patterns, attracting unhealthy partners. My programs & therapy aims to guide women towards breaking these patterns, cultivating self-confidence, and ultimately finding healthy, secure relationships where they can thrive.

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioural Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
