Having been raised in a emotion-denying household, then spent six years in the Military and then the trauma of divorce, I use my personal experience to assist couples to strengthen their relationship bond by expressing what is really going on beneath the surface of conflict or loss of closeness that they might experience.
Relationship issues effect most aspects of your life. If we feel safe and secure in our home with our partner, then we can face all other adversity so much easier. I specialize in assisting that close connective bond with Attachment Focused processes using Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy as well as many other modalities which are useful towards the same goal. I believe couple work needs much more time than the standard 50-60 minutes so ask that you be prepared to stay in session between 90 to 120 minutes.

My expertise extends to assisting individuals facing complex problems such as separation or divorce, and domestic violence.
Working in the mental health field since 2004, I have learned that accessing psychological support comes after people have exhausted their own resources and supports. My therapeutic approach is warm, compassionate, and collaborative and focuses on helping individuals honour their values and strengths, tailoring interventions that equip them with the skills they need to meet their goals and create meaningful changes in their lives.

I work with individuals battling with grief, loss and trauma. Losses occur for us all of the time and sometimes, they hit us so hard we need a little extra support. We may experience loss of relationships, transitionary times for our children starting school or leaving home, a passing of a family member or breakdowns in relationships. Some of these losses feel as though we aren't allowed to grieve and our practice is a safe space to do so. Life is busy and you shouldn't have to fit your healing around someone else's timeline; that's why I exclusively offer out-of-hours sessions after 5pm and on weekends.

I’m a registered Counsellor with a strong focus on men’s issues – supporting men through times of transitions, crises of meaning and mid-life issues. Men have particular struggles and experiences that I have gathered tools to help navigate and lighten. As a bloke, we still have a cultural expectation to cope, sort it out ourselves and just get on with it - but my experience is that challenges are much easier to face with a bit of support. The truth is, there are times in our life when things fall apart and we feel like we can’t hold it together any longer. It’s at these crunch times that we can deepen our experience of life.

Andrea works from a non-diagnostic, collaborative approach, working with clients according to your preferences and values, with an aim to foster a sense of empowerment and autonomy.

Greetings, and thank you for searching for some assistance to help you to reach the goal(s) andor solve the problem(s) you may be experiencing or even struggling with. As a mature experienced psychologist who grew up in differing cultures and loves her job, my method is to listen and explore with kindness and compassion so you can address the cause and maintenance of your problem, for without a good assessment the treatment can be wrong. Original and current unhelpful coping is identified and better ways to evaluate and problem solve are found. Although therapy can be difficult, I try to make it as fun as possible!

If you're looking for a run of the mill counsellor or mental health professional to assist with your mental health queries, feel free to contact one of my very capable colleagues. I look at life through a different lens, with a transpersonal -even spiritual- mindfulness-based filter. Expect to see life from a broader perspective, while still being very practical. Expect to work from the inside out: YOU will change, and then your circumstances will. Understanding how you (and your brain) operate will help you manage your emotions and behaviour more effectively. This, in turn, will make you less sensitive to (negative) emotion-shifts.

Divorce Counsellors
How does therapy for people affected by a divorce work?
Individuals may feel a number of emotions following a divorce, such as shock, guilt, grief, anger, and fear. Therapists offer a non-judgmental space for individuals to talk about what they’ve experienced and process their emotions. Therapists will help clients develop coping strategies. They can also help a client rebuild their sense of self and self-worth and talk about what a happier future might look like.
What’s the most common type of therapy following a divorce?
There are several types of therapy that may be useful for divorce, including cognitive behavioural, acceptance and commitment, solution-focused brief, and mindfulness-based therapies. Many therapy types are talk-therapy based, which is typically the most popular option for individuals dealing with divorce. Cognitive behavioural therapy is a widely-used talk therapy, however, there’s no specific therapy type that’s designed to help people with divorce, and different types will work depending on the person.
When should an individual seek help due to a divorce?
When the feelings of a divorced individual, or an individual going through the process of divorce, begin to disrupt healthy daily functioning, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not performing at work due to problems with anxiety or motivation, if they’re no longer seeing friends due to feelings of shame, or if they’re not properly taking care of themselves as a result of depression, speaking to a professional could help.
How do you encourage someone to go to therapy due to a divorce?
It’s helpful to express concern and love for the individual while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Sharing how the individual appears to be suffering, and what effects it has on them or on their children, should be done with compassion and empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
