Megan Shea (AMHSW) · No waitlist · Medicare available · Accepting new clients I’m really glad you’re here. If you’ve been holding things together on the surface but something underneath isn’t working — in your relationships, your direction, or how you’re actually feeling — this is a place to actually work through it. If you’ve tried therapy before and felt like it didn’t go anywhere, you’re not alone. A lot of people come to me after feeling stuck in conversations that didn’t lead to change. My approach is active, practical, and focused on helping you understand what’s happening — and what to do next.

I have been practising as a therapist for 20 years, both overseas and in Australia. I specialise in working with clients who are struggling with relationships - these can be romantic, family or work. Singles or couples. I am also a certified Gottman couples therapist and an experienced fertility counsellor. Working in this area requires expert knowledge and skill, so it is a good idea to choose a therapist who is suitably trained in relationship dynamics. I can provide evidence-based techniques to help you improve and make decisions about the relationships in your life.

Although I enjoy helping people in many areas, I really like working with anxiety, life transitions, relationship counselling, trauma & grief.
I combine the knowledge and expertise of a clinical psychologist with the experience of counselling and therapy and the wisdom of many years of life. I believe in living life as fully and positively as possible. Although I use a number of modalities I particularly like working with EMDR, schema based therapy, experiential work, and EFT for couples.

Many of the women I work with describe feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or exhausted from trying to hold everything together.
I support women who struggle with relationship challenges, low self-confidence, chronic stress, emotional dysregulation, and the lingering impact of trauma. You may find yourself repeating the same patterns, feeling disconnected from your body, or constantly doubting your worth. On the outside you appear “fine", but inside you feel broken. You're not.

Anxiety Therapists
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
