Hi, I'm Sarah – a Brisbane-based Clinical Psychologist. I believe effective therapy involves both safety and courage. You need a space where you can feel supported, while also being challenged to explore parts of yourself that feel difficult or unfamiliar. My approach is grounded in relational psychodynamic theory, which means I’m interested in how our past and present relationships shape who we are and how we feel. I often work with people who want to understand themselves more deeply and create more meaningful, fulfilling lives.

I began working in education settings 15 years ago and have spent the last 10 years helping adults and teens to manage anxiety and depression.
Are you in need of some extra emotional support? I look forward to working with people who are ready to be agents of change in their own lives. The possibility of attending counselling may have appeared in your life as an option after or during a period of loss, trauma, or a life transition. I am prepared to walk alongside people to gently allow them to tell their story for the purpose of emotional growth and self-empowerment. My goal is to help you live a more full and enjoyable life, more attuned to your values.

We understand that the daily weight of navigating life with unresolved trauma or neurodivergence can feel like a constant, isolating struggle. Feeling misunderstood while trying to find your footing is exhausting, but you absolutely don't have to carry it all on your own. You deserve more than just getting by; you deserve a truly compassionate, non-judgmental space dedicated to your healing. A place where your experiences are validated and you finally feel seen, heard, and deeply understood.

To be deeply seen and understood while at our most vulnerable is a powerful experience that can open the door to profound change and transformation. I offer a gentle yet powerful partnership approach that enables us to find creative ways to navigate the places where you feel stuck - feeling into and exploring your 'edges', listening deeply to your own internal wisdom, and experimenting with new ways of thinking and being. This process allows the possibility of meaningful change that can reverberate throughout many areas of your life.

Being able to talk about what's going on in your life in a safe and non-judgemental space can be a powerful catalyst for change. Counselling is based on your needs with interventions grounded in a holistic understanding of you and your life. It aims to facilitate improved self-knowledge and understanding of issues you may be experiencing, which enhances steps towards improved mental health and emotional well being. If agreed upon I am able to work with you in helping to understand the association between past experiences and current behaviour. Early influences can shape us and our ability to exert control over present functioning.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
