I specialise in working with couples, and those experiencing stress and mental health challenges (including drug/alcohol issues). Hello and welcome! My name is Fiona and I have been a counsellor and psychotherapist for 10 years. Our journey through life often doesn't go to plan and we sometimes feel 'derailed' from our desired path. Things may feel unbalanced and unworkable, resulting in great distress and difficulty. With a warm, empathetic and collaborative style, I support clients to identify and work on problematic thoughts, beliefs, feelings and behaviours. Building a strong therapeutic connection is critical to this process.

I primarily use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy ( ACT) to help clients understand their thoughts and emotions, develop practical coping tools, and build flexibility and resilience.
My approach is warm, relaxed, and down to earth, no judgment, just genuine care and practical support. I’m a generally registered psychologist who works with children, adolescents, and adults around concerns such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, self-harm, emotional regulation, stress, and major life transitions. I also work with neurodivergent individuals and those exploring their identity, strengths, and challenges in a world that doesn’t always make space for how their brains work.

I typically use a blend of CBT and ACT, personalized to your circumstances.
My therapeutic approach is warm, but direct. I believe that psychology’s primary role is to resolve upsetting symptoms and help people live life as fully as possible within their circumstances. Therapy with me often involves a combination of hard conversations, laughs, and setting goals and targets to improve life.

It is normal, at these times, to find it hard to relax, to get sufficient sleeep, and eat well - and even harder to act from a place of calm.
I offer you a safe space to speak and feel what's going on, really. I genuinely care -from a slight distance. I won't be pressuring you in specific ways that your loved ones might do with the best of intentions. My aim is to support you to work things out for yourself. I encourage you to listen to your heart as well as your head, and to honour your needs.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists
How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.

What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?
The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.

Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?
Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.

How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?
A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
