Are your emotions telling you something is up? Depression, anxiety, drug and alcohol use could be a sign that some things in your life just aren't where you'd like them to be. Maybe a relationship is unfulfilling or in conflict. Perhaps someone close is using family violence or narcissistic abuse. Perhaps you have lost someone close.

I work in a trauma-informed and strengths-based manner, and believe significant change can come about within the holding space of a safe therapeutic relationship .
Sometimes, we find ourselves facing challenges that are bigger than we are able to understand or navigate on our own. The therapeutic process can help you to make sense of, adapt to, and heal from difficult life experiences. Therapy can also be a reflective space to get clearer on your values and directions in life; to connect with your innermost wishes for your future and bring these into being. I am committed to collaborating with you to figure out the best approach for you, based on your particular situation.

FACT IS: "It's not a matter of IF life will throw obstacles and hurdles at you... it's WHEN." For 20 years I have been counselling people from all walks of life (CEOs, surgeons and psychologists through to miners, call centre staff, managers and cleaners). And what I've noticed is how many people struggle with their relationships - that could be the relationship with their partner , their child, their parents, their co-workers, their mates or the biggest and most important relationship of them all... THEMSELVES! Now, they don't always know it's their relationship at first, because it might look like stress, conflict, anxiety, etc.

Over 10 years of experience simultaneously managing a business and a family of nine. I can say the balance between doing whatever it takes to provide for those we love and maintaining a healthy relationship can be tough and traumatic, especially if we do it alone. For this reason, I became an accredited counsellor and established Halcyon to help people by providing tools and clarity to move forward as a healthy and happy individual and family.

Couples Counselling

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
