My approach brings together Person-Centred Therapy, CBT, and Psychodynamic Therapy.
Hello, I’m Emma, founder of The Flawed Journey. I work with adults experiencing anxiety, people-pleasing, low self-worth, relationship difficulties, and the lasting impact of painful childhood experiences. I offer a warm, thoughtful space where you can speak openly, feel understood, and begin to make sense of what’s happening beneath the surface. You might be used to holding everything together, thinking about everyone else’s feelings, and saying “I’m fine” even when you’re not. Perhaps you replay conversations, worry you’ve upset someone, or find it difficult to say what you need without feeling guilty.

I offer individual psychotherapy and I specialize in longer-term psychodynamic psychotherapy.
I am a clinical psychologist and I have a strong interest in working with individuals to cultivate and maintain psychological resilience. I welcome clients who appreciate explorative work and insight-oriented therapy to assist their personal growth and enhance wellbeing. Many people want things to be different in their lives, and very often they do not realize they have been experiencing stress, anxiety or depression for a very long time. They may have thought about, or feel ambivalent, to reach out. With the appropriate support, understanding and compassion, things can change and they can be better equipped to move life forward.

I blend person-centred therapy with CBT/DBT, mindfulness, psychodynamic insight, parts (IFS-informed) work and body-based nervous system regulation.
You may be keeping up with work, relationships and everyday life while feeling anxious, emotionally exhausted, stuck in familiar patterns or unable to properly switch off. I work with adults experiencing anxiety, burnout, relationship difficulties, low mood, self-worth concerns, trauma-related patterns, or concerns around alcohol and other drug use. Some clients appear capable on the outside but feel increasingly stretched underneath. Together, we make sense of what is happening, understand the patterns maintaining it, and build more sustainable ways of responding.

On the inside you might be feeling anxious, overwhelmed or never quite good enough, and on the outside you're trying to hold it together. Sometimes you overthink conversations, put others first, struggle to switch off, or find yourself repeating painful relationship patterns. I've been there myself, and now I help adults who are experiencing anxiety, stress, low self-worth and the effects of difficult past experiences. You don't need to have everything worked out before starting. Together, we make sense of what's happening, why it's happening, and work together towards feeling lighter, more grounded, confident and connected.

My approach is warm and relational, using attachment, interpersonal and psychodynamic therapies to explore how your past shapes your present.
Hello and welcome. If you’re seeking deeper self-understanding and meaningful change, we can work together to strengthen your connection with yourself and others. While practical strategies can be valuable, they don't always address the underlying reasons we find ourselves repeating the same emotional or relational patterns. Whether you're seeking relief from distress, wanting greater self-awareness, or stronger connections in your relationships, therapy can help you move toward a more fulfilling and meaingful life. Together, we can explore the deeper roots of these experiences and create opportunities for change.

Psychodynamic Therapists
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
