Since 2005, I have worked as a psychotherapist and social worker in a range of human service and community work settings. My clinical practice has been shaped by people's experience of chronic illness, natural disasters, trauma, disability, mental ill-health, ageing, grief and loss. I consider the therapeutic space to be a safe and enriched environment. I strive to bring a gentle curiosity to these explorations, and to acknowledge the importance of working at your pace. Central to my work is a belief in our capacity for insight, creativity, and growth – particularly in response to the difficulties we face.

In therapy, the idea is to not just work on the symptoms (anxiety, depression, anger, low self-esteem and low self-confidence, insecurities, etc) but also work on what could be the possible origin of them, what unconscious emotional conflicts from your past are still unresolved in your life that are maintaining the symptoms. By doing this, you will start a process of self-discovery and reflection of your emotional conflicts. This process of self-awareness and understanding of your emotional issues will allow you to begin healing and change yourself first and, as a result, how you relate to people around you.

I am a caring, compassionate, non-judgemental counsellor ready to provide you with that confidential cocoon of support. I am a Covid-safe and climate-aware counsellor, and understand that some sections of society will try to pathologise your fears and concerns. I will take your concerns seriously.

Whilst I draw upon a range of therapy modalities to support my clients, I enjoy Narrative Therapy approaches as it supports men to recognise that they are not the problem that they present with.
You might feel stuck, overwhelmed, or weighed down by the stories you’ve told yourself—or the ones others have told you—about who you are and how you should live. These stories may have formed into problems, leading you to believe the problem is you. But that’s not true—the problem is the problem, not you. You want to make sense of these experiences, challenge unhelpful narratives, and uncover your strengths, values, and skills. Together, we’ll rewrite these stories to help you create a life that feels meaningful, authentic, and aligned with who you truly are.

I work with males and females, but particularly enjoy working with boys and men who are struggling to understand their role in society.
I work from a phenomenological perspective, which uses an open dialogue and development of a positive relationship between therapist and client to reveal deep details of the experiences of each client's life. I integrate strategies from CBT and ACT (types of therapy), as well as wisdom from philosophy such as Stoicism to scaffold positive behaviour change

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
