I work with clients struggling with all levels of stress and anxiety, including PTSD.
I am passionate about neuroscience that enables us to become aware of the neurophysiological circuits that drive us mostly unbeknowns to us at a conscious level. Psychoeducation is paramount to gain resilience and self-regulation. Those who become well-equipped to change their unwanted, undesirable behaviours are people who understand how to use their superpowers for quality-of-life instead of mismanaging them in ways that can have devastating effects on their wellbeing and life trajectory. Together we can work on reacquainting you with your former self or reinventing a new You poised to navigate life with a greater ease.

I work with adults navigating stress, anxiety, burnout, trauma, or challenges in relationships, boundaries, or self-worth.
Many of us were raised with the notion that experiencing psychological, emotional or relationship difficulties meant that we were somehow broken; or that seeking help is a sign of weakness. I don’t subscribe to this belief. Reaching out is brave, and I am yet to talk to a person that hasn’t had their share of personal challenges. You are not broken, you are human; and therapy is not about fixing, it’s about healing.

I am a clinical psychologist and nutritionist with a passion for helping clients with range of difficulties such as sleeping problems, anxiety, depression, disordered eating patterns, weight management, stress, trauma, and poor self-esteem.
My primary therapeutic approach is Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP), which is an emotion-focused approach which helps clients understand and address their core emotional problems. This is done by acquainting clients with the automatic, and usually unconscious, behaviours that maintain their problems and/or anxiety.

Whether you’re navigating ADHD, Autism, anxiety, depression, OCD, BPD or burnout, my goal is to help you better understand yourself and find startegies that work for you.
Taking the first step toward therapy can feel intimidating, but it’s also an important moment of strength. Maybe you’re an adult navigating the confusing terrain of identity, relationships, and maintaining this "mental wellbeing" buzzword we are always hearing about. Or maybe you're a young person feeling the weight of big emotions, school demands, and a sense of disconnection from those around you. You’ve probably tried to push through on your own. Maybe you’ve even seen a therapist before. You’re tired of pretending everything’s okay. You’re tired of managing things alone. And you’re probably wondering: Why is this still so hard?

Anxiety, self-esteem issues, overwhelming stress, grief and loss or trauma are some of the issues that I can address in collaboration with children, teens and adult clients.
As well as typical talk therapy, I utilise non-verbal, creative interventions to enable the expression of feelings, emotions and thoughts through drawing or using miniatures in sand tray. This helps to communicate relevant issues and enhance self-understanding, self-development and healing when finding the right words is simply too difficult.

I have specialist training in treating PTSD/C-PTSD, and anxiety-related issues, but work with a range of mental health issues.
Hi, I'm Bec Stewart. Many people express that while traditional talk therapy is supportive, it often doesn't lead to the change they truly desire. This is why I’m passionate about holistic therapy and mental health approaches that go beyond surface-level solutions by addressing issues at their roots (EMDR, parts-work, & somatic therapies ). It takes courage and effort, but I believe it offers the potential for true transformation.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
