If you’ve landed on this page, chances are you’ve been carrying a lot for a while. Maybe your relationship feels distant, tense, or stuck in the same arguments, and you long to feel close, understood, and on the same team again. Or maybe the struggle feels more personal — you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, anxious, low, or stuck in your own head, wondering why everything feels so hard.
Many of the women and couples I work with feel disconnected, unheard, and unsure of how to move forward. Some are dealing with communication breakdown, trust issues, betrayal, parenting stress, or the pain of feeling alone in their relationship.

People often come to therapy without a clear way of explaining what’s wrong. It may feel like something is not quite working, is harder than it should be, or has become difficult to manage.
You do not need to have the right words or a clear explanation to begin. What matters is having space to speak openly and to be taken seriously.
Rather than starting with assumptions or labels, the focus is on understanding how things have developed, how they are functioning now, and what makes sense for you. From there, therapy is shaped in a way that is built around you, not applied to you.

Life transitions can unsettle your sense of self at any age. Women of all ages experience changes and transitions that leave them feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or quietly lost. You may be facing immigration, menopause, health concerns, career changes, grief, or an identity that no longer fits. Even positive change can feel disorienting. Even long-awaited milestones can carry unexpected grief. Standing at the threshold of adulthood, about to get married, or navigating motherhood can still be challenging. You do not need to be in crisis to seek support.

I offer compassionate, evidence-based trauma-informed counselling in the Redlands as well as surrounding areas (Cleveland, Victoria Point, Redland bay, Capalaba, Bayside Brisbane) supporting individuals, adolescents, couples and families through depression, anxiety, grief, chronic illness, stress, life transitions and relationship challenges.
I don’t see people as ‘the problem’. Instead, we look at what’s happening around you — your relationships, roles, pressures, life stages, history, and supports — and how all of that is impacting how you’re feeling. It’s a way of working that focuses on understanding, not labelling.

Accepting new clients. Evening appointments available.
I am a general psychologist with over 30 years of experience. I come to therapy with a non-pathologising view of symptoms and behaviour. My view is that the vast majority of symptoms of "mental illness" are an understandable response to various life circumstances. Some deep in our past, some in our present. I am passionate about helping people to heal, grow, and live full lives. I enjoy working at deep levels to shift stuckness, often the result of prior trauma. I work only with adults (over 20yo).

I enjoy helping clients who are experiencing life challenges and are stressed. It is rewarding to journey with clients as they take the initial step acknowledging they need help then be willing to look deeply within themselves as they learn ways to cope. My clients want to lead more satisfying and healthy lives, enjoy happier and more harmonious relationships (at home or work), and fulfil their potential. I help my clients achieve greater inner calm, resilience, health and wellbeing, and personal goals, so they enjoy their life, love and appreciate who they are, get off autopilot default mode, and be a positive force in the world.

Hi, I’m Shana—counsellor, equine-assisted psychotherapist, late diagnosed ADHD-er & animal lover.
I created Firefly Counselling Services because I am someone who values genuine connection & know how important it is to feel truly seen, heard & understood. I have particular interests in perinatal mental health, women’s health, life transitions, trauma, grief, persistent pain, neurodiversity, and general mood concerns such as anxiety and low mood. I understand that these experiences do not exist in isolation, and take a holistic view of each person’s emotional, physical, and relational world.
I believe that every person is the expert in their own life. Therapy is a collaborative process, where we work together in a safe, supportive space to explore challenges, build understanding, and create meaningful change aligned with what matters most to you.

Therapy for women who are carrying too much, eldest daughters, high-functioning women struggling with burnout, and identity healing. I work with women who are often the “strong one” or someone others rely on. Many feel emotionally overwhelmed, burnt out, or disconnected from themselves while still functioning highly in daily life. They may be navigating identity, cultural expectations, or people-pleasing patterns. In our work together, I create a safe, supportive space to explore your experiences, understand your patterns, and help you move toward feeling more grounded, clear, and connected to yourself.

In my 29 years as a mental health provider, I have taken great pride in helping people through a variety of challenges and life events. To me, therapy is about become whole again, healing current issues and past traumas, (even the ones we don’t remember, but our bodies and psyche does). Most often clients present with one issue and the connections we make during our work together show many layers and exactly why these situations arise. I help my clients not only understand where they are and why they are there, but also what they must do to change their lives, heal, and move forward a happier and healthier person.

Women's Issues Therapists
How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
How can women prepare for therapy?
Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.
How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realised.
How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?
Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
