Jo is a psychologist and educator who provides psychoeducational assessments for young people aged 8-25 years. A comprehensive assessment can reveal underlying vulnerabilities that may contribute to behavioural or learning difficulties at school. Jo offers assessments for cognitive ability, academic achievement, learning difficulties, ADHD, intellectual disability and giftedness. Jo's strength-based approach ensures that clients feel well supported throughout the assessment process. Her comprehensive reports make clear what the results mean for the young person and how families and teachers may implement recommendations .

I am a compassionate 'Person Centered' Counsellor supporting you to re- learn how to develop an optimistic sense of self, helping you to understand the roots and cause of internal conflicts. Change is not something we do. It arises out of a deeper experience with ourselves. Whether it be negative mindset, anxiety, depression, fear, relationship issues, chronic illness. It takes time to change entrenched behaviours developed in your lifespan. The therapeutic process of counselling, enables change of unwanted behaviours - using practical ways, making better life choices, one step at a time in a private and safe space.

At ArtFull Therapy we see adults and children at all stages in life. There is a professional focus on those living with additional needs and neurological challenges (incl. ASD; Ageing well; Dementia, Stroke; Carer support). No need to be good at art however, it does require an interest/ commitment to get to know yourself better and to identify thoughts and behaviours not serving you well. Clients are taught to identify those, regulate, communicate, self-observe, adapt, engage, change. This builds confidence and resilience allowing for a translation of this new awareness and learnt skills for better relationships and well-being.

Note: Jimmy is available on Fridays and Saturdays. What's most important to Jimmy is that you come away from therapy with a sense of hope. Jimmy aims to address what you want to work on, he won't make anyone talk about or address what they don't want to - he's very client lead in his approach. You and Jimmy will work together to design a treatment plan that you feel willing and able to engage in. The recipe here is that you're the expert on your own life , it's Jimmy's job to be the expert in Psychology - then those two elements are brought Jimmy will be welcoming, engaged, empathetic and non-judgmental throughout your therapy.

Teen Counsellors

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
