Life doesn't always go as we plan. We can end up experiencing relationship struggles or abuse, find it difficult to get past grief and loss, find ourselves relying on substances or other addictive behaviours to get by. We may experience depression or anxiety, or wake up one morning and realise that for whatever reason, things that used to work for us are just not working anymore. We may feel exhausted or empty or disappointed and not really know why. Whether you are battling a long term problem or experiencing a new and unexpected struggle, we can support and equip you through empathetic and confidential counselling.

Have you finally gotten to the point where you're struggling to manage issues you have been holding onto for years? Or Do you often find yourself feeling quite stuck in the present? With the daily hustle of life, it can become very easy to neglect parts of ourselves that really need attention. Often there are unresolved issues or traumas from the past that have never been addressed and keep coming back to remind us that they're still there and need to be attended to. Unfortunately, they can keep coming back if we continue to ignore them.

Hello, I'm a Mental Health Social Worker with decades of experience working with people from many different backgrounds and presentations. I have particular expertise in trauma and can offer more than "talk therapy" to get to the root of the damage trauma does to your nervous system and all that flows from that. Maybe you've spent years feeling misunderstood and judged by others. Maybe you've been going to therapy and somehow no one seems to "get" what you're going through now and in the past. As leading trauma therapist Gabor Mate has said "It all starts with waking up to what our bodies and minds are suppressing".

Under this foundation I use EMDR as a method of reducing trauma and Internal Family Systems as a way of explaining how the mind creates parts and helps people heal wounded parts of their psyche and end negative patterns.
I work primarily with adults who experienced childhood trauma. If you have suffered from emotional neglect, physical or sexual abuse or any other trauma I can help with the emotional or psychological impact; the possible impairment of self- esteem/self worth, the dysfunctional relationships you may have at times and the physical health consequences of childhood trauma. I help you to identify how you experienced these as a child and what kind of feelings arise as you now look at the experiences through an adult lens. We keep one foot in the present whilst accessing the trauma experienced and help you move to resilience and recovery

I work across the lifespan with those who may be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, anxious, emotionally exhausted or unsure of how to move forward. Many of my clients are neurodivergent, have experienced trauma, struggle with emotional regulation, relationships, boundaries or self-understanding, or simply feel that the strategies they have used in the past are no longer working. I provide a space to slow things down, understand what is happening, and work towards practical, meaningful change at a manageable pace.

With each session, CBT, DBT, ACT, Internal Family Systems, and mindfulness, may all offer a way for clients to find safety, establish trust with self and others, gain self-awareness, compassion, and move towards acceptance, healing and hope.
Therapy is a collaborative process where a client and therapist work together with curiosity, self-compassion and healing. Understanding patterns of behaviour allows individuals to make sense of their lives and connect with the pain points that keep clients ‘stuck’. I have experience working with clients who have had a mental health inpatient admission, have experienced mental health challenges, or have a history of addiction and substance use. I work with people who may feel their boarding school experience has adversely impacted their adult life. I work with older persons navigating change, loss, diagnosis, and trauma resurgence.

I use IFS and ACT modalities in sessions with clients.
Sometimes things feel like they are too hard. Sometimes we may feel like we are 'stuck' because of a challenging situation or from a past pattern of behaviour that doesn't seem to let us go. Sometimes our thoughts seem to go around and around and take control of our actions. Sometimes, we just don't know which direction we need to head in, or want to head in, and why. These transitions in life need some time to process. And sometimes it feels like nobody understands us and we just need someone to talk to and to find a bit of grounding and presence.

My primary approach is Internal Family Systems therapy, supported by Metacognitive Therapy, ACT, Jungian-informed work, and hypnosis when appropriate.
You can book a free 30-minute consultation with me from the start. I specialise in trauma, anxiety, depression, and mood disorders that cause ongoing pain and require real change. I also work with couples who want to reconnect, reduce conflict, and understand the patterns that keep them apart. I have specific experience in perinatal and postnatal depression. Many of my clients are insightful and self aware, yet still feel stuck inside their own responses. I offer 30 minutes rather than the usual 15, so you have enough time to gain clarity and decide whether working together feels right.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapists
What is Internal Family Systems therapy?
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a type of talk therapy that focuses on sub-personalities, or “families,” within a person, which may be made up of wounded parts and unpleasant emotions like anger and shame. These sub-personalities can come into conflict with each other and with an individual’s core Self, leaving the person feeling detached from positive traits such as the “8 C’s” of confidence, calmness, creativity, clarity, curiosity, courage, compassion, and connectedness. By healing a patient’s wounded parts, a therapist aims to restore balance and bring on positive change.

How does Internal Family Systems therapy work?
An IFS therapist will work with a patient to identify their particular sub-personalities, recognize the emotions powering them, and release them. By doing so, the patient should become more able to address any underlying problems their sub-personalities may have been trying to protect them from. Ultimately, a patient discovers ways to manage internal and external conflicts on their own, through techniques such as relaxation exercises, journaling, and making charts depicting the relationships between their core Self and their distinct parts.

Does Internal Family Systems therapy work?
IFS therapy has been shown to help people address conditions such as depression, anxiety, panic, fears and phobias, trauma, and substance use disorders. Some research has also found that it can help individuals deal with symptoms of physical health conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, such as pain, everyday functioning, depressive feelings, and low self-compassion. There are some conditions for which IFS treatment, specifically discussions of one’s “parts,” may be less appropriate, such as schizophrenia or other states that involve psychosis or paranoia.

How long does Internal Family Systems therapy take?
As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for IFS therapy. After becoming comfortable with a therapist and the core concepts of IFS, some patients quickly make progress. While experiences vary, most will find that it is a relatively longer-term therapy, involving months and sometimes years of sessions.
