As a Psychologist, my passion is to support clients who are working towards their personal growth, assisting them in expanding their understanding of the limiting beliefs and repeated patterns of behaviors that contribute to their emotional symptoms. Using evidence-based therapeutic approaches and working collaboratively towards the clients’ goals, my role is to support clients reframe these thoughts/beliefs and develop new patterns of behaviors aligned with their personal values, which in turn promotes symptom reduction and enables clients to live a more fulfilling life.

Life is messy and imperfect. Sexuality and identity is a lifelong journey. So many of us are limited in our exploration due to shame, stigma, or lack of sexuality education. I believe in a sex-positive approach which acknowledges and celebrates the diversity of human sexuality, identity and expression. When we are informed, empowered and validated, we live happier and more authentic lives.

As a somatic psychotherapist and Christian counsellor, I help people to find healing for themselves and their relationships. When meeting with my clients, I look at the cultural context — societal, religious, and family — and seek to understand how culture shapes the personal story of each individual. I then attend to how you hold yourself, your memories, beliefs, and sufferings in your mind, body, and spirit. My goal is that you will become who you are truly meant to be, learn to love and be loved, and restore the sense of self, sense of worth, freedom, fulfilment, and joy in your life.

For many clients, I incorporate attachment-based, Internal Family Systems and trauma-informed approaches.
I work with adults who experience anxiety, emotional distress or relationship difficulties, particularly when these feel longstanding, confusing or hard to shift. This might include difficulty forming or maintaining relationships, repeating patterns of conflict, family stress, parenting feeling overwhelming or a persistent sense of disconnection or loneliness. Many people I work with want to make sense of how their past and relational experiences influence the way they react and respond today. I also support children experiencing anxiety, stress or emotional regulation difficulties and work closely with caregivers.

Life can be both exciting and challenging. One of the greatest challenges is learning to be open and recognising that we often repeat the same mistakes, asking ourselves, “Why is this happening to me?” We develop patterns of behaviour that we unconsciously repeat, almost as if we are blindfolded. If you recognise that these patterns are affecting your life and the lives of those you love, I’m here to support you. If you are a man and see that your anger is impacting your family life and want to work through it, feel free to reach out.

Attachment-based Therapists
Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?
Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?
Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?
Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioural Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?
Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
