My client is someone facing emotional and life challenges, such as anxiety, depression, self-doubt, or other struggles. They need a safe space to express themselves, gain clarity, and develop healthier coping strategies. Their goal is to build self-esteem, feel more in control, and create a fulfilling life that aligns with their values. Ultimately, they want peace of mind, resilience, and the confidence to move forward with a renewed sense of purpose. I aim to help them uncover the root of their struggles and guide them toward lasting growth and healing.

I support clients with a variety of presentations and referrals to enhance their overall lifestyle satisfaction and wellbeing. These range from anxiety and depressive symptoms, to self esteem and other more significantly deeply rooted psychological impairment, such as trauma. My clients are driven and motivated to create positive change in their lives by adopting proactive strategies, along with lowering their protective mechanisms to explore challenges which have had significant impacts on their wellbeing and functioning.

Hello, I'm James, The Curious Counsellor. What is my counselling practice about. Well, YOU. You are the most important person in your life. I have 2 main areas I work with people in. Grief, loss & bereavement including suicide. And Psycho-dynamic therapy. This is getting to understand the underlying factors that make up 'who you are'. A deeper dive into what makes you, you. I use a few starting 'tools' which can help us identify your personality and then ask about your complete life history, including your family history. With all these parts, we search for what you like about yourself and what you would like to change.

Our passion at Liberty Road Counselling is to walk with you as you move toward the rich and fulfilling life you desire; a life of liberty, purpose and meaning. To us, this means to be at liberty to live a life free from the domination of the troubling thoughts and emotions common to human experience. Perhaps one of the more healing experiences we can have when we are troubled or hurting, is to be with someone who is able to sit with you in your place of pain, someone who offers compassion, acceptance and a listening ear. It is our aim to build this relationship with all that come to us

Even though you might not always feel like it, you are the expert in your own life. Life's complexities can often leave us feeling overwhelmed, confused, and adrift, lacking purpose and direction. This can lead to adopting unhealthy coping mechanisms to avoid thoughts and feelings altogether. My approach involves treating you with empathy, acceptance, and without judgment in a practical and supportive manner. Together, we will collaborate to rediscover your strengths, nurture resilience, and unlock your potential for growth, facilitating the changes you desire. I firmly believe in the possibility of positive change.

If you find yourself feeling stuck in thoughts, feelings, or the past, counselling can help you move forward. Do you struggle with managing negative self-talk and wish to develop a more compassionate relationship with yourself? Perhaps you seek to understand the dynamics within your family and how they influence your current behaviours and emotions. Through the counselling process I want to hear the change and goals one has for their life and help assist where I can to achieve this.

I enjoy working with clients who are ready for a serious change in their lives. It's okay if you don't have specific or clear goals at first, but it's always helpful to be aware of what it would look like if therapy was going to work for you. I love working with clients who are committed to practicing what they have learnt in therapy in their everyday life . Also, I always appreciate when clients feel comfortable enough within sessions to voice what they feel is working for them, where they are still stuck, or unsure if something actually working for them.

My clients are everyday people who have become stuck. It can be conflict, breakup, anxiety, depression, addiction, family upheaval or simply an unhappiness that doesn’t budge. My clients know what works, and what doesn't, and value the opportunity to sound things out with an empathic and non-judgmental therapist who can stay engaged even when the going gets tough. Being the co-creator of an authentic, safe relationship in therapy helps clients to maintain authentic, safe, and life affirming relationships outside of therapy.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
