Have you been struggling with negative self-talk or feeling anxious right before a game or race? This can feel very stressful and is common amongst athletes in high performance. This can lead to anger outbursts, low self-confidence, and perfectionism, which can lead to decreased performance in your sport.

Hello! My name is Salome, and I am a registered psychologist, who has a strong desire to help people achieve their mental health goals. Often, our past traumas can have a significant impact on the way we experience the world around us. Without proper support, we may have developed unhealthy coping mechanisms in our search for comfort and peace. These unresolved issues can lead to a range of psycho-social problems, including anxiety, depression, interpersonal conflicts, and negative self-perception. However, facing these complex and overwhelming emotions can be a daunting task to undertake on our own.

Life is never a smooth sailing. It is full of ups and downs and sometimes nasty surprises. It might be difficult to think, sometimes, that things can get better. There may be troubles at work with boss or a co-worker, unsettled feelings around in-laws, difficulties in resolving issues with a partner, or even issues within yourself. As difficult as those issues may sound, it is possible to attend to them, and with the right help, to resolve them.

Clients seek my professional support to alleviate current distress they experience which could be caused by psychological, emotional, environmental and/or physical factors. Clients often request short to medium term interventions to lessen the effects of psychological trauma or recent and/or old events on their lives. Clients attend sessions with clinical diagnoses or their current experiences of moderate to severe level of symptoms resulting their interest in receiving assessments for formal diagnoses. Specific needs and goals of therapy could be discussed in the first session. I am currently studying Master of Psychology.

Somewhere along the way, there has been a rupture between you and your child. You are constantly overwhelmed by their BIG emotions and behaviours, and you are doing your best to respond differently from your default parenting patterns. Maybe they've been through something big. You desire a stronger, more secure and trusting relationship with your child. You dream of fostering co-operation and harmonious sibling (and peer) relationships. Your really want to support them in their growth, development and wellbeing.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
