Hi, I’m Jake (they/he). There's a tonne of therapy buzzwords thrown around these days, words that can feel important and quietly position therapists as the experts on life. That hierarchy is not a great way to start any relationship let alone a therapeutic one. My practice recognises that therapy does not exist outside culture. It is influenced by histories of power and by colonial and capitalist ideas about productivity and normality. I believe we need to name that and recognise the impact of these structures on marginalised bodies, so the work can feel honest rather than performative.

You might be starting to feel like something is off, or you're not able to be your true self. Like life is becoming too complex or overwhelming to cope with. You might notice changes in your relationships with loved ones, co-workers, or friends, accompanied with feeling less motivated, connected, or present than you once were. You may have tried turning to the things that once brought you joy, but found limited success and are left feeling burnt out and stuck. You might be able to picture what a balanced life looks like, but struggle with creating real change.

You might be feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or carrying the weight of past experiences that are difficult to make sense of. This could show up as anxiety, low mood, emotional reactivity, or a sense that something isn't quite right. Perhaps you've been coping for a long time but want more than just getting by. Many people I work with are seeking clarity, relief, and a greater sense of peace. They want to move forward without the past continuing to shape how they feel or function.

Most people who reach out to me are holding it together on the outside. Working, showing up, doing the things. Underneath, something has been carrying too much for too long. Trauma, addiction, anxiety, burnout, grief, relationship stress, or that stuck feeling that's hard to name. Some don't know where to begin, only that things can't keep going the way they have. Therapy is a place to slow down and make sense of what's been happening, at your pace.

I help men get on top of anger, stress, and habits that have taken over the same way you'd fix anything properly: work out what's wrong, then fix it right, not patch it over. Think less therapist, more personal trainer: you do the work, I guide and keep you accountable. My approach draws on CAT and CBT, working a bit like detective work, mapping the pattern, tracing where it comes from, working out what's driving it. I'm a former tradie who had to get off the tools due to a disabillity. I am Online, Australia-wide, evenings and weekends. Mainly men, but anyone who's a good fit, including LGBTQIA+ clients, is welcome

Many of the people I work with appear capable and functional to others, yet may privately feel stuck, lost, or unsure of who they are becoming. You may find yourself repeating the same patterns in relationships, being the rescuer, carrying the responsibility for everyone else or feeling frustrated that your own needs remain unclear and unmet.
You may struggle with ADHD symptoms, confusing feelings, self-doubt, or a quiet sense that life is not unfolding in the way you hoped.
I work primarily with people feeling strain in relationships, identity conflict, cultural or faith expectations, and questions about meaning and direction.

Is therapy for men different than it is for women?
Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.
How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
How can men prepare for therapy?
Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.
What should men know about the process of therapy?
One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
