Psychologists and Therapists for Teens in Smithfield, NSW
I work with children, adolescents and adults.
Hi. I’m Colleen Nicholas. I’m an Art Therapist, Sandtray Therapist, Interactive Drawing Therapist and Counsellor. I offer expressive therapies in addition to talk therapy, because sometimes words are not enough. It can be difficult to find words to express what we are thinking, feeling or experiencing. Sometimes we are not aware of the “real issue” that’s causing our distress.

I am a registered counsellor and logotherapist working with people who feel stuck, overwhelmed, or uncertain despite trying to make sense of their lives.
I offer a calm, accepting and attentive space where we slow things down, make sense of what’s happening, and then move toward practical ways forward.
At times, people reach a point where thinking things through on their own stops being enough, and having a structured space to untangle what’s happening becomes necessary. Therapy can help you regain clarity and a more grounded sense of direction.

Hi, I'm Aiden. You are not a diagnosis. You are not a collection of symptoms. You are not a problem to be solved. Whatever has brought you here deserves to be taken seriously. I don't believe in one-size-fits-all therapy because people aren't one-size-fits-all. My job is to understand who you are, how you came to be that person, and where you want to go from here.

You might be feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or carrying the weight of past experiences that are difficult to make sense of. This could show up as anxiety, low mood, emotional reactivity, or a sense that something isn't quite right. Perhaps you've been coping for a long time but want more than just getting by. Many people I work with are seeking clarity, relief, and a greater sense of peace. They want to move forward without the past continuing to shape how they feel or function.

I use IFS therapy to help children, adolescents and adults.
I have experience as a senior psychiatrist in the public health system, where I've spent a long time working out what works and what doesn't. I've developed an approach that integrates many therapies and puts them together.

Before I worked as a clinical psychologist, I was a professional musician. This line of work taught me a lot. I found that the best music is made when one listens carefully, and responds to what is happening in the moment, rather than simply reciting familiar material. I bring the same philosophy to my work as a psychologist. It is incredibly important to first listen, and deeply understand the goals of the individual, which then guide the direction of therapy.

“I am so looking forward to getting to know you as a unique individual, and working together to create the life you wish for. I believe that creating sustainable change is only possible when working with people holistically. I have always cringed at traditional, clinical styles of therapy, so instead I am committed to treating you as a real person and working together to help you live your best life. I love it when people take a proactive approach to their mental health. There isn’t a day that goes by where I don’t appreciate how much of a privilege it is to get to know my clients and work together with them in a meaningful way"

I have a specific focus on providing culturally-informed therapy and have worked in disability, youth mental health, and LGBTIQA+ spaces.
I specialise in belonging, identity, and relationship issues that include attachment wounds, complex family of origin stories, and life after divorce. I also provide support for mood issues, big life changes, sexuality, shame, and trauma. I’m most passionate about making sure my clients are seen as full and complex — without the need to leave parts of their identity at the door.

FAQ - Teenage and Adolescent Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
