I know how heavy and confusing life can be when patterns keep repeating. Using evidence based approaches I want to connect with your unique self to support you to make the changes you want and help you feel more at peace in your life. I focus on supporting people who feel tied down by their past, who want to feel stable in their emotions, and have deeper connections with others. During our sessions I will take the time to understand you as a unique person, and tailor my approach to best meet your needs.

I have over 10 years of experience supporting people from a mental health perspective, I've completed additional training and certification in a range of modalities including: CBT, DBT, Schema Therapy, Bowen Family Systems, Psychoneuroimmunology, and MBSR to name a few.
We all face challenges in life. Whether it be feeling emotionally down, or anxious, or within our close personal relationships or our career. I believe that most people in these situations have a sense that something isn't right for them, but feel stuck on what to do about it. "I'm not totally happy in my relationship, but I love this person and want to make it work", "I'm unhappy at work, but I don't know what steps I can take to change things". People want clarity, my job is to work with them to find it.

I use a schema therapy approach in my practice which is an evidenced based form of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).
I love my work. I have been a practicing Psychologist for the last 13 years, working in addictions and trauma in public health. I have worked with people from a variety of backgrounds, which has given me a thorough understanding of the complexity of problems that people experience. My skill lies in helping people understand the issues they bring to therapy, so that we can work together on evidence based solutions to solve them. I also like to think that I bring a friendly and personable approach to this process, making therapy a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

I often use Schema Therapy in my practice.
Are you feeling overly anxious, having low or changeable moods? Or perhaps you are finding it hard to focus and are feeling lonely or isolated? Are you using substances more than you would like to? Are you experiencing low self esteem and a sense of shame? Do you find it hard to know what you need? Are you being impacted by past experiences and relationships more than you would like to be? Would you like to improve your current relationship with yourself and others? Would you prefer to be less anxious and/or depressed and in turn feel more motivated to do the things that are important to you?

The core of my integrative trauma informed practice is Gestalt therapy including elements of Schema therapy, Internal Family Systems and Buddhist psychology.
My wealth of lived experiences including gender transition inform my collaborative client centred counselling approach. Whilst presenting issues may include depression, anxiety, identity incongruence, dysphoria, trauma, interpersonal challenges, addiction, loneliness, and more, I seek to work with the underlying causes as I believe that through addressing the root causes of the presenting symptoms that psychological wellbeing can be achieved without judgement or further pathologisation.

Treatments include, exposure therapy, CBT Trauma (CPT), EMDR and Schema Therapy.
I often think about the courage that it takes, to meet someone for the first time and open up to a stranger! If you are thinking about treatment, I want you to know I will listen to you, not with judgement but with compassion. I will seek to understand and explore with you, the deeper issues, that may be contributing to your current challenges or distress. Over time if you can trust me, “I will see you!” “I will step with you at your pace.” “I will listen to you and seek to understand.”

Schema Therapy Counsellors

How does schema therapy work?

Schema therapy is based on the idea that maladaptive thought patterns formed in childhood—that other people can never be relied on, for example—can interfere with healthy functioning in adulthood. Accordingly, schema therapy works by directly targeting such unhealthy schemas, identifying their consequences, and replacing them with more adaptive ways of thinking. To this end, schema therapists aim to “reparent” the client by offering what they didn’t get in childhood—validation, for instance, or compassion—to reorient their worldview.

Is schema therapy evidence-based?

Schema therapy is still considered relatively new, and research on its efficacy is still in progress. However, some studies have concluded that it can be effective at treating certain mental health conditions, most notably personality disorders such as borderline personality disorder. Evidence for its efficacy in treating conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, and OCD is promising but less conclusive, and experts warn that much of the existing research is of low quality.

Is schema therapy a type of CBT?

Schema therapy is based on many principles of CBT, most notably the process of recognising and challenging maladaptive thought patterns. But because schema therapy also draws from other approaches, including psychoanalysis and Gestalt therapy, it is not considered a form of CBT. It also typically delves deeper into the client’s childhood than does CBT.

How does schema therapy work?

Schema therapy does not call for a set number of sessions and is instead open-ended, with the treatment timeline depending on the client’s primary concern(s), progress, and preferences. Treatment that lasts between six months and two years is common, though many clients will start to see progress much earlier than that.
