You used to be driven, but now you don't even recognise yourself. You feel isolated, ignored, and utterly exhausted. A newfound impatience is taking its toll on your relationship with your partner and children. Have you wondered when this began or why it is impacting you so heavily? You might have been reading about stress due to motherhood or menopause, but that doesn't mean you have to accept it. You long to retake control of your life, but you're uncertain where to begin.

Art Therapy is becoming increasingly popular with therapy clients due to the unique ability to bypass the logical thinking mind and go deep to the root cause of many of our behaviours and beliefs in the zone of the unconscious mind. Many clients find art therapy less confronting and more enjoyable than other therapies. Alison discovered how effective art therapy could be for herself, about 15 years ago as a stressed, workaholic business owner also juggling a young family. For the past 2.5 years Alison has had the pleasure of working with children, adolescent and adult clients in hospital and community settings.

It's OK to feel daunted by the prospect of counselling; sessions with me will be collaborative and will go at your own pace. There will be no judgment, you won't have to talk about anything that feels too painful until you are ready and I will not tell you what to do. Sometimes people think they have to be “crazy” or have mental health issues, or have experienced a severe trauma to see a therapist. My response is, if it’s important to you, then it’s worth talking about with someone. It doesn’t matter how small you think the issue is, talking about it can help.

I bring four decades of experience in mental health, art, design. I work with individuals, couples, and family members who seek to change their relationships with themselves and others. I aim to open possibilities to people who have little hope for change, struggle with depression, anxiety, and trauma symptoms, feeling overwhelmed and lost. This is often accompanied by counterproductive soothing behaviours such as substance use, addiction to gambling, gaming, sex, or screen use. Further, some clients may stay in relationships that deepen their belief that they cannot become the agents of their own lives.

One of my greatest passions is helping people live better lives. Achieving my clients' counselling goals is my ultimate reward. Understanding my client's needs and aims of counselling is essential for the best treatment. Clients need confidentiality to express their problems freely and find effective support and therapy for their psychological concerns. Clients' goals may change from session to session, therefore, supporting the clients through the counselling journey and tailoring the best treatment to their needs is crucial.

Female Counsellors
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
