Anxiety Psychologists and Therapists in Middle Cove, NSW

Juliane Thieme
Psychotherapist, MA, PACFA
Middle Cove, NSW 2068
I have experience of working with a wide range of issues including depression/low mood/anger anxiety/ panic, difficulties with relationships, perfectionism/low self-esteem, self-destructive behaviour, loneliness/social anxiety, insecure attachment work-related problems, difficult family relationships, fertility, pregnancy and parenthood.
It can be hard trying to cope on your own. Talking to a trained professional helps you make sense of your thoughts and feelings and it means you have somebody on your side while you face difficult times. My approach is psychodynamic, which means I explore with you both your conscious and your unconscious mind in order to facilitate long-lasting change.

I'm Jay (they/them), a transmasculine non-binary counselor with a focus on supporting people in the LGBTIQ+ community, neurodivergent folk, and others who feel like their identity or lifestyle is stigmatised or misunderstood. I work with issues of identity, meaning, and purpose and feelings of stuckness. Maybe your life doesn't feel quite right despite (or maybe especially) it looking good on paper, or old issues are starting to bubble up now. I believe that everyone deserves to have a safe, compassionate, and nonjudgmental space to work through the issues that have brought them into therapy - however long that may take.

No doubt you're starting to feel exhausted by the stress and anxiety that is building up inside you and you may have even adopted some unhelpful habits to help you cope.
I work with clients to help them determine how to make changes to their lives so they can live and work sustainably and feel calm and refreshed every day. Surprisingly, it doesn't mean doing less but rather it's about doing life differently and ensuring you have the skills to meet whatever comes your way.

Anxiety Therapists
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
