Techniques like energy psychology, can be particularly beneficial, helping address both the emotional and somatic dimensions of distress, supporting healing and the physical side, including chronic illnesses.
Women and men with illness related to psychological distress or trauma often represent a demographic that experiences complex, intertwined challenges, where physical health issues are closely linked to emotional and psychological well-being. This group typically includes people in their 40s to 60s, many of whom are navigating significant life transitions, such as menopause, caregiving responsibilities, or changes in career or family dynamics. These transitions can exacerbate underlying emotional pain, especially when combined with a history of trauma or unresolved psychological distress and can lead to chronic illnesses.

I have trained in a variety of approaches but the ones I am most drawn to are: Internal Family Systems (IFS), Somatic (emotion and body focussed) therapies, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Brainspotting.
Hi! I am a counsellor and mental health social worker and I work with people who want help to heal from unresolved trauma. I also work with people who struggle with boundary setting and 'people pleasing', which often leads to burnout. For professionals, I love providing counselling to other counsellors and helping professionals, and I believe engaging in our own therapy makes us better counsellors in many ways. Clinical Supervision is also available for counsellors and social workers.

My method incorporates somatic, body-based exercises, NeuroAffective Touch Therapy, Internal Family Systems, EFT/Tapping and Jungian concepts.
The one constant we all share, regardless of our gender, wealth, race, location or religious beliefs is that we will spend our life in our body. This will also be one of the most confronting, challenging and potentially beautiful relationships we'll ever experience. Can we fully embrace our body? Can we come to terms with the social and cultural factors surrounding our body and, when the time comes to leave our body, will we do so with love and gratitude for how it helped us to connect with ourselves and others? Let's explore those questions together.

A life event that destabilises us can create all range of emotions and behavioural responses without our awareness and in turn, cause additional distress to your life. When we feel threatened, challenged or overwhelmed - our thoughts, feelings and behaviours can be all consuming. Without emotional processing and resolving the distress can form unhealthy maladaptive responses and associations. Engaging in professional help to support you through these events can provide you adaptive ways to respond to your world. Be brave and reach out.

I believe we all have capacity to deal with issues we meet along the way, however sometimes we get out of touch with that part of ourselves. I love to work together with clients to help them get back to that part of themselves, to be able to Identify what is stopping them from reaching their goals. Often it’s things we believe about ourselves from our past, which are not always true. Beliefs about self-worth, not being good enough, not being loveable! These negative beliefs about ourselves may have been formed in childhood or in relationships that have been unhealthy. I am able to work with you, collaboratively, to achieve your goal

I work to uncover and transform the issues which underlie the anxiety or depression rather than just treat the symptoms. These are usually wounds from childhood which we were unable to deal with as they occurred. I also work with trauma, initially to stabilise and build trust, moving onto trauma processing. I am inspired and intrigued by my clients creativity and spontaneity and always try to connect with where they're at, seeing the person as part of a whole system. I believe that healing comes from the client, I am just a facilitator.

Feeling anxious, sad, under stress and need to talk to someone or find out how you can manage your life better? It doesn’t always have to be hard! Life can be full and rich and meaningful. I use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to work through the challenges and help clients move towards greater psychological flexibility, living a more values-based life than they may have been able to achieve previously.

Somatic Counsellors

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
