Hi, I'm David. I'm inspired by people summoning the courage to seek support for issues that have got out of control; situations where their reactions are hurting themselves and the people around them... I support men and women experiencing symptoms like distress, anxiety, anger and emotional volatility, or low energy, motivation and flat-mood, often arising from trauma, various forms of abuse or neglect. They often feel stuck, uncertain or inferior, struggling to be present and engaged in their own lives. This impacts their relationships - their partner, family members, work, and social connections.

Hi, I'm Curtis, a psychologist and psychotherapist working from the Blue Mountains, in-person and online. Often the things that bring us to therapy are the very things we've spent years trying to outrun. Sometimes it's a crisis. Sometimes just a quiet sense that something isn't working. Whatever brings you here, I want you to know that what you're experiencing makes sense, and that real change is possible. My approach is integrative and holistic. I work with you as a whole person, your inner world, your body, your relationships, your sense of meaning and identity. I target core issues, rather than treating a set of symptoms.

I am a psychotherapist who works with the person directly in front me. I collaborate with each person to unlock the inner knowing contained within their bodies. Our bodies hold an intuitive wisdom with a huge potential for healing and growth. We only need learn how to communicate the body’s language. Symptoms like depression and anxiety are not treated as problems but rather explored as experiences in the body being communicated. When we meet them as bound up processes that are seeking to be freed, we find these processes have a purpose with our best intentions at heart.

I work best with people who genuinely want to move toward greater peace, clarity, and connection. You might come to therapy because: You carry anxiety or depression that doesn’t feel resolved despite your best efforts You’ve experienced trauma, grief, or loss, and the past still shows up in your thoughts, moods, or relationships You find yourself repeating negative patterns—old schemas—that keep you frustrated, stuck, or in conflict Parts of you feel fragmented or in conflict. You’re in a relationship that’s struggling—communication is poor, trust is strained, or you feel disconnected

I am a clinical psychologist who works across a variety of presentations including anxiety and mood disorders. I hope to bring a warm, empathic and authentic approach to the issues that people bring to therapy. I recognise the investment that people make when they share their difficulties with someone and commit to therapy, and work to honour that commitment by delivering evidence based treatments, that are tailored to a persons needs. I’ve benefitted greatly from the experience of working across a range of inpatient and outpatient hospital settings.

If you feel pulled between conflicting messages about men, you are not alone. Many of my clients seek out therapy because life feels empty or meaningless, or because they feel stuck, demotivated, or weighed down by anxiety, depression, grief, anger, burnout, or chronic procrastination. Some are not happy with their life, themselves, their future or even the world they were born into. They may feel caught in cycles of fear, shame, self-criticism, or frustration, and want tangible progress toward clarity, peace, and a steady and productive life.

Many people struggle to incorporate healthy lifestyles into day to day living. Most of us know the behaviours that are recommended however, there are many challenges - structural, economic and personal that impact on us on a day to day basis. The end result can be a feeling of being overwhelmed and behaviours and thoughts that we feel we cannot control. Although it is not always possible to change structures we can build personal resilience and learn to control thoughts, feelings and behaviours. I offer services to assist you to achieve your goals - by gaining control over your feelings, and building resilience in how you react.

Today, many men are confused about our role and relevance in society. A clear sense of manhood, is I believe, critical to healthy relationships between men and women; men and other men; and obviously men as parents. I believe that my personal experiences are relevant here. Over many years, as parent, partner, friend and colleague, I have learned from my many mistakes and now feel that in a non-judgmental and collaborative way, I have something to offer both men and women in this regard. I believe that therapy is the best way to find out about oneself, that we are all unique and that each person’s life pathway is intensely personal

FAQ - Therapist Gender
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
