Psychodynamic psychotherapy considers many root causes of psychological issues to have their origins in unexpressed and unresolved feelings about earlier relationships and events.
You may feel anxious, depressed, experience recurrent unhelpful relationship patterns, have a pervasive sense of discontent or just feel stuck. I can help you understand the history of your problems and learn healthier ways to relate to yourself and others. Whether you are dealing with unresolved early trauma, need help setting better boundaries in relationships, feel you don't quite belong, are underachieving, or cannot enjoy your successes, I can help you find solutions to your immediate issues, while also exploring how your previous life experiences affect your responses, relationships and self-perception.

I draw from a range of depth-oriented therapeutic modalities such as Dream Work, Jungian Psychology, Internal Family Systems Therapy, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Somatic Psychotherapy and Psychedelic Integration.
With a deeply curious and open-minded approach, I work in a way that integrates the paradigms of ancient wisdom and evidence based practice. I believe that there is a unique intelligence behind the challenges or experiences individuals bring to therapy. I aim to be led by this inherent intelligence, with an understanding that we all have a natural inclination towards health and wholeness when we are provided with the appropriate support.

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
You are probably a person who has had a degree of success in your life so far, but experiences a level of noticeable dissatisfaction or unresolved difficulty, which you may have felt for some time. Often this experience shows itself in our unhappiness with relationships, family or work/career. You may have had a recent loss that you are having difficulty moving on from, or perhaps you are noticing a pattern in your experiences that seem to recur, no matter what you try to do differently. You are a self-reflective person who is curious about how to change yourself and are now motivated to do so.

My work is psychodynamic, and I see adolescents through to the elderly.
There are so many different reasons people have for wanting to seek therapy, and it can be daunting to look for help. My approach is warm and empathic. I like to work collaboratively with clients to explore what has been troubling you, to gain insights together as to what contributes to these feelings and where your difficulties may have stemmed from. My work is supportive, confidential and consistent. Ultimately, I hope to work with you to enable you to live a fuller, happier life that feels more satisfying to you.

I utilise CBT, ACT, Attachment Theory, NT, Transpersonal Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy and psychoeducation.
One of the barriers to self-care is allowing yourself to go into the depths of your experiences. Often, we are challenged to explore and understand this profound chasm, to touch what is held there, to hear its messages, and to connect with compassion to the raw emotions that have been lying dormant for years or just surfaced. By peering into the abyss, we can gain deeper understanding of ourselves and insight into the meaning of our lives; transforming and opening up possibilities the future could hold for us.

Psychodynamic Counsellors

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
