I am a Clinical Psychologist at Support Space Psychology in Randwick. While I have experience in treating a wide range of mental health difficulties, my main passion is helping those suffering from anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive and related disorders. This interest was reflected in my research at both an undergraduate and postgraduate level and further developed while working at the Anxiety Treatment and Research Unit at Cumberland Hospital.

I have special interests in providing therapy to adults experiencing anxiety ( panic or social), often on a background of trauma or difficult childhood experiences, and sometimes with substance use. Finding direction and purpose, overcoming depressed mood, and reducing relationship and work pressures are also common challenges that I assist with. I offer strategies useful for managing overwhelming feelings so that you can have more choice in how to respond to stress.

I take a compassionate and curious approach to working with clients who struggle with addictions, complex trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, poor body image, stress, burn-out, relationships, work, finding purpose, grief and loss, and 12-step recovery.
We will work together on what is most important to you. Many clients are embarking on their recovery journey and are seeking relief from very acute addictive behaviours. Others are seeking longer-term psychotherapy to heal the wounds underlying those addictions. Others still, are seeking just a few sessions for specific challenges, such as a relationship break-up, bouts of anxiety or depression, or because they feel stuck in some way. And often, people don’t really know what they want and need yet, and that’s ok too. Whatever you bring, you are welcome here. Please have a look at my website for food addiction recovery group work.

Clients experiencing grief and loss, relationship challenges, anxiety, depression & other life transitions will be supported with compassion.
Understanding how you experience the world is central to my work as a therapist. I am interested how feelings and thoughts can manifest in our bodies. Gentle exploration of these somatic responses can assist in deeper understanding of our emotional world. Working together, I would support you toward your self-acceptance of challenging thoughts and feelings. Alongside my private practice, I work with a national not-for-profit supporting parents experiencing antenatal and postnatal anxiety, depression and adjustment to parenthood - as a spokesperson, managing clinical intake and clinical writing.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
