Couples Psychologists and Therapists in Haymarket

Amy Shi
Counsellor
Haymarket, NSW 2000
We attend to your body (sensations, nervous system states), your relationships (attachment patterns, interpersonal dynamics), and questions of meaning (spirituality, transformation, integration).
My clients are typically professionals and entrepreneurs dealing with burnout and disconnection. You've probably tried therapy before. You understand your patterns. You know why you are the way you are, perhaps you've read self help books and tried meditation. And yet you're mentally cluttered, emotionally exhausted, and feel disconnected—from yourself and from genuine intimacy with others. Stuck in patterns that aren't serving you and struggling to feel joy in even the best moments.

I support clients with depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, life transitions, relationship and family conflict, self-esteem, burnout, and identity concerns including race, gender, and sexuality.
You may find yourself caught in anxiety or patterns that keep repeating, no matter how much insight you already have. Perhaps this is tangled up with cross-cultural identity, or the pressure of holding it all together while feeling disconnected from yourself. You don’t just want relief — you want to understand where these patterns come from, with compassion and curiosity instead of judgement.

We may have behaviours we would like to change or relationships we would like to enrich.
I am trained in EMDR and specialise in trauma recovery. The word trauma means 'wound' or hurt. It is not what happens to us, but what happens inside of us as a result of that hurt. Trauma is the invisible force that shapes our lives. It shapes the way we live, the way we love and the way we make sense of the world. It is the root of our deepest wounds.

I work with a wide variety of clients, including those experiencing DSM5/ICD11 mental disorders, such as mood disorders, personality disorders, anxiety, depression, relationship problems and a host of others.
I am a specialist in online therapy, and am based in Australia and SouthEast Asia. Nobody comes to see a psychotherapist (and pays the therapist good money) unless they want something to change in their lives. My job is to help clients to identify what's in need of changing, and working with them to find the best way to make the changes.

FAQ - About Couples Therapy
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
