I am flexible and able to work with both males and females. Age does not preclude me from seeing someone. I am accepting of anyone who is looking for someone to listen to them and will give them a voice. I worked in Samaritans and Lifeline for 20 years as a centre supervisor, trainer and shift supervisor. I have recently been working with addiction and the family of the addict and am able to hold you in a safe space as you become self aware and self accepting.

My mission is to aid and support the emotional health and well-being of clients. I am passionate about helping clients develop a sense of self, assisting clients unpack their baggage and wade through it, determining what to keep and what to let go. I work closely and frequently with clients who may need to build resilience, process their narrative, understand their responses and explore how they can become the healthiest version of themselves. I enjoy working creatively with clients in a person-centered approach with heavy consideration to contemporary psychotherapy.

My counselling draws on my belief that each client's treatment needs to be individualized to his or her unique history and life story, culture, values, strengths and needs. I believe in creating a safe, supportive and non - judgmental environment in which the client will be treated with respect and confidentiality. It is here that the client is supported in finding their value, healing and strength in resolving their struggles and pain. My sincere wish is for my clients to leave the counselling process changed and equipped with new skills to approach their future with confidence and resilience.

I particularly enjoy working with people who are experiencing relationship difficulties. I see many individuals, couples and families, who are struggling with disconnection or conflict in their relationships. This disconnection can often lead to discontentment, feelings of isolation, loneliness and just a general feeling of being misunderstood. My aim is to help each person examine their hopes, needs and concerns, and help them find their own path to a healthier, more satisfying day-to-day existence.

I provide therapy for adults, adolescents, children, and families who are willing to take that first step towards change and a brighter future. I approach therapy collaboratively and help people find their own unique approach to overcome the challenges of life, and I ensure that this therapy is evidence-based. Instead of only focusing on the reasons that people come into therapy, I also focus on the strengths that can get someone back on their feet again.

Art therapy creates a visual language of communication and personal expression as an alternative to 'talk only' therapy, when words or feelings are hard to express. My person-centred and psychodynamic approach to therapy is also informed by IFS and Mindfulness practice. I am a creative and thoughtful individual who works in a collaborative and compassionate manner with children, young people and adults when their emotions, thinking and behaviour is out of balance.

Issues such as relationship difficulties, addictions, career, life transitions, parenting, depression, anxiety, stress, body image, negative beliefs and thoughts, emotional overwhelm, aggression, low energy, impulsivity etc. can affect your self esteem and your ability to think clearly and solve problems effectively. Open communication and rapport is essential. However, I believe long-term outcomes and goal attainment is achieved by providing clients with a psychological toolkit per se. A variety of strategies, coping and problem-solving skills that can be implemented in the future, and generalised to various issues. I believe in actively involving the client in the therapeutic process and assisting clients build confidence.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
