I have worked with individuals and couples for over thirty years, helping them negotiate the struggles of life in this time of quick change, uncertainty and significant social pressure. Relationships are the first victims when people become anxious or challenged in their lives. Yet I believe relationships are the core to good mental health and personal development. These issues are relevant to people of all ages, and not specific to gender, race or religion. The presenting symptom could be grief,
anxiety
, depression, arguments, irritability or any form of dysfunctional behaviour - the underlying issue has to be addressed.

I work with adults and have experience in inpatient settings, addiction, depression, psychosis,
anxiety
disorders, complex PTSD and borderline personality disorder.
My ideal client is interested in developing self-awareness and learning skills to better manage difficult thoughts and feelings. They are looking for a therapist who they can build a working relationship with, based on genuine respect, support, and compassion, and who draws from the most recent research about what is effective in treatment. They want therapy to be tailored to their unique life experiences and personal strengths and weaknesses. My ideal client is someone who wants therapy to be a collaborative process, where the therapist and client work together to help the client reach their goals.

I have worked both in inpatient facilities and in private practice with clients experiencing issues such as addiction, depression,
anxiety
, developmental and complex trauma, PTSD, grief, relationship problems and identity confusion.
My greatest satisfaction is working with clients to help them transcend the issues and experiences that hold them back from having the lives they want. Embarking on psychotherapy should be one of the most meaningful experiences a person can have. Accompanying another human being on that path is the most deeply rewarding aspect of my work.

Do you feel like the people around you need you to be strong, but you feel like you’re about to break, or have already broken? Does a voice in your head criticise everything you do and leave you feeling miserable and alone? Are you feeling like you're different from everyone around you? You’re not alone, you’re not broken, and there is a way to change those feelings and to handle those pressures and
fears
. You might be looking for solutions and feeling trapped, or hopeless. You’re not trapped, and there is hope - you just need someone to share this with, and to help you see your way forward. That’s what I do.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
