Life can be a constant effort to keep a hold on things and I want to help you sort this out with my decades of experience, knowledge spanning many areas, and deep empathy for your struggle. Not all clients and therapists are the right fit, so please review my calmmindpsychology youtube channel to see if we resonate. I am both a psychotherapist and psychologist so I tend to dive deep, but can also help you with current life crises. I work best with people who have already done some therapy and know that personal growth is difficult, sometimes hard, always ongoing but worth it as a way of becoming more authentic and available in life.

No two people are the same, no two stories identical. Perhaps you are already clear about what you want from therapy, perhaps our starting point is to figure this out. No matter what, all of you is welcome. Together, we aim to: heal old emotional wounds you might still be hurting from, clear up current anxiety, stress confusion or disheartenment that weigh on you; make good decisions for your life and find inner joy, calm and balance to sustain you in a meaningful way of being. When working with couples, I support partners to repair relational injuries, strengthen communication, commitment and trust and deepen love and intimacy.

Therapy is about increasing meaning, connection and quality of life. I support clients to explore what their needs (and goals) are, and how best they may be met. Some clients seek accessible, practical knowledge and skills to feel more equipped to manage stressors, or overcome ill mental health. Others need safety and space to better understand themselves and their experience, and guidance to use that insight to create meaning, self-compassion, and the changes that they wish to see in their lives. For many of my clients, therapy is an opportunity to be believed in, until they are better able to believe in themselves.

I help people create a life that is worth being present for. I know the frustration of feeling stuck in your life. There is something that isn’t working for you - your mind, body, choices, patterns, job, relationship. Maybe your relationships are unsatisfying and you desire more connection, communication, safety and empathy with your friends and partner. Perhaps you are stuck in a pattern of people pleasing and often feel overlooked, undervalued and frustrated. It could be that your mind has tendencies that don’t work for you and you find yourself overwhelmed with overthinking, anxiety, depression or stress.

The world is changing, not just on a macro scale concerning issues like climate change, globalisation and social media, but on a micro scale too; the way we identify personally in terms of intersectionality, sexuality and relationship orientation. Whilst there is an increasing awareness and growing acceptance of new and different ways of being in the world, we can also find a whole new set of complex challenges arise when we start to embody our true identity. Maybe these challenges are rooted in past trauma, negative core beliefs and self-talk, overwhelming emotions, unhelpful coping behaviours or ways of relating to others.

I have extensive experience working in the field of Addiction and Trauma and believe whole heartedly that recovery is possible. I am a creative therapist who works intuitively and experimentally. I believe in treating the underlying causes not just the symptoms. I have held various senior clinical roles and continue to work as a Senior therapist at South Pacific Private where I run the sex and love addiction intensive programs. Working with Addiction and intimacy related disorders is an area I am passionate about as I love witnessing the profound change that can occur when we get vulnerable, trust and become our authentic selves.

Attachment-based Counsellors

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioural Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
