I also demonstrate and provide practical tools to alleviate anxiety and support you during sessions.
I work with clients to explore and understand what is going on in their lives and within themselves, so they can live differently. My experience shows that clients often know what they do not like about themselves and their lives. However, it can be tricky to flip the coin and identify, at a deeper level, their needs and what they truly value. I listen carefully and help you understand yourself. Together we identify goals and work towards them. There is no one size fits all plan or type of therapy that provides a magic wand. However there are better ways of doing therapy over others.

I'm Megan Shea, a psychotherapist working with adults navigating anxiety, relationship patterns, identity shifts, and major life transitions.
I draw on evidence-based approaches — CBT, mindfulness, solution-focused, and narrative therapy — alongside somatic and nervous-system-informed work. Sessions begin with a thorough assessment so we're clear on what's actually going on before we decide what to do next. This isn't a symptom-only model; we work with the whole person.

I work with people who feel stuck - whether depressed; anxious; as a result of trauma; caught in a cycle of repetitive destructive behaviours like alcohol and drug use, gambling or sex addiction; dysfunctional relationships; or lacking direction, meaning and purpose.
I draw on a range of evidence-based therapies as appropriate for each client. These methods are accompanied by empathy for the human condition and are informed by insights gained as a partner, father, son, sibling, friend, colleague and community member. I bring my authentic self into the therapeutic relationship to walk beside those who come to see me.

I work with adults and couples in Sydney who are feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, relationship challenges, identity questions, or significant life transitions.
People come to me when experiencing anxiety, overwhelm, emotional exhaustion, relationship stress, identity questions, self-esteem challenges, life transitions, illness or loss. Sometimes, the impact of past experiences shape our present. You don’t need it all figured out before starting therapy. We begin wherever you are and make sense of what’s happening.

Anxiety Therapists
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
