I also have an interest in OCD and eating disorders.
Here you are at perhaps the hardest part of your mental health journey, which is asking for help. I aim to respond to that request first by establishing a therapeutic relationship in which you feel safe and seen. From that foundation I hope to work with you to address the challenges causing distress in your life, and to do so from a place of curiosity, understanding, and hope.

I work with people who may be struggling with anxiety, depression, obsessive thinking, challenging circumstances, adjustment to change, relationship issues, work or career-related concerns, issues with self-confidence or self-esteem, or deeper existential issues.
I draw on a number of evidence-based therapy approaches in my work, including approaches that focus more on gaining a practical understanding of what keeps you stuck, and working in practical ways to get unstuck, as well as approaches that involve deeper or longer-term exploration of yourself, your own personal psychology, and your challenges.

I am a Clinical Psychologist with a special interest in the treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, health anxiety, intrusive thoughts, chronic worrying (Generalised Anxiety Disorder) and related anxiety disorders.
I have had training in Rumination-Focused ERP which is a helpful approach for all OCD clients, but especially crucial when working with clients struggling with compulsive rumination, mental compulsions or 'Pure O' type OCD. This approach involves addressing both how to stop ruminating as well as the underlying reasons why it might be difficult to stop.

Specific areas of interest include: adolescent and adult psychosis, complex trauma, depression and anxiety (e.g., social anxiety, generalized anxiety, OCD, panic disorder, agoraphobia & PTSD).
I'm a clinical psychologist who works with people who are hoping to cope better with strong moods such as sadness, low mood or depression, anger or if feeling constantly worried, nervous or anxious. Working together we will find out how this has developed and why it hasn't gone away. In this way we can gain an understanding of the issue and develop skills and strategies to cope better right now, and to manage and/or prevent these issues from returning in the future.

A little bit about me: I like to make sure I have a good relationship with all of my clients, that’s really important to me. I use up-to-date research to inform my treatments, and often a little bit of humour, to make sure the people I see get the most out of their therapy. I’ve worked clinically in hospitals and private practice, and I’ve worked as a lecturer at universities.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Counsellors

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine, fluoxetine, and sertraline, among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
