Are you finding it hard to cope with day to day stressors. Do you have difficulty with food and body image, maybe you are restricting, binging, purging or yo-yo dieting. Have you found that your drug or alcohol intake has increased and is starting to feel out of control, or has been out of control for a while, have you just had a lapse/relapse. Is your anxiety holding you back or are you having difficulty with your relationships, emotion regulation or asserting boundaries?

I am a Clinical Psychologist with 13 years of experience. I am incredibly passionate about supporting women in all stages of their life, including fertility, pre-natal/postnatal period, first time mothers, empty nesters, retirees etc. I've also supported many people through their depression, grief and anxiety (social anxiety, generalised anxiety, panic, agoraphobia), especially those who are experiencing mental health issues for the first time. It can be frightening not knowing whether, what you're feeling is normal, and whether you would recover. Getting help early on, from experienced mental health professionals is very important.

Sometimes you just need to talk. TRAUMA? PTSD? ANXIETY? I invite you to contact me. You're welcome to talk in depth about whatever is bothering you. It can feel daunting to reach out but please remember that therapy doesn’t have to be miserable! Sometimes, we are out of touch with our feelings because our early caregivers could not meet our needs. Perhaps it was not safe or acceptable to be ourselves in the past. Psychotherapy involves learning to deeply understand yourself. The healing power of psychotherapy can be found in the quality of your relationship with your therapist. You are welcome to contact me today.

I work as an art psychotherapist with adults and children that have experienced trauma, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, health related issues and have worked in community contexts to support parents and their children. Sometimes it can be hard to express our experiences verbally and working through creative means can help us gain an understanding of ourselves and enable us to express and find emotional relief for issues that might otherwise seem overwhelming. It provides a way of expressing our inner world without the need for words. Art therapy is suitable for all ages and requires no prior artistic skills.

It is said that the trauma we experienced in our past can inform the way we learn to experience our current world. Not having the supports we needed along the way may have also lead us to cope in unhealthy ways, all while searching for ease and peace. Unique to us all, unresolved pain and disconnection can feel too complex or overwhelming to face by ourselves. For many, a range of bio-psycho-social issues develop, including anxiety, depression, loss of motivation, interpersonal conflicts or a negative view of self or the world. So how do we begin to identify and learn healthier ways of coping and reconnecting with the self?

Trauma and PTSD Counsellors

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
