Like a flower, we bloom in the right environment; in the play therapy room I work with empathy and acceptance to create a safe space for children and families in order for them to work through their issues and “grow”. I recognise the importance of family and offer assistance to parents and carers to work towards a safer, happier and more relaxed home environment in a strength-based way. Child-centred Play Therapy is a gentle, trauma-informed and neuro-affirming way of supporting children in their unique reactions to coping with daily life, big life events or trauma and attachment issues.

Often children don’t have words to describe their experiences and feelings and instead reveal them through behaviours which can be misunderstood. They may get into trouble, be labelled, or disconnect. I work with children and families just like this. As a carer, reaching out for support can be the hardest step. I work closely with you and your child through Play Therapy which is relationship based therapy for children aged 3-12 years. Play is a child’s natural way of communicating and Play Therapy creates the environment where the therapist enters into a child’s world and understands the experience from their perspective.

I arrived as a refugee with my family back in 1999. My first experience as a psychologist was in trauma field, volunteering my university holidays with STARTTS, non-for-profit organisation helping survivors of trauma. At the time I was a young person, helping other refugee kids and young people assimilate to Australia. Following my university degree, I facilitated childhood trauma paediatric clinics as the only psychologist on board with NSW Area Health for 11 years, working closely with senior paediatricians completing assessments for children, ranging from infants until 16 years of age.

As a registered psychologist specialising in autism and ADHD, my ideal clients are children and adults navigating the unique challenges associated with neurodivergence. They come to me seeking clarity about their experiences, through formal assessment or ongoing therapy. Ultimately, my clients want to be understood, by themselves and those around them. They seek the right support systems to help them thrive, not just cope. Whether it's a child struggling at school, an adult navigating the workplace, or someone receiving their diagnosis later in life, my role is to empower them with knowledge, self-awareness, and practical tools.

I work exclusively with children aged 3 to 11, and adolescent girls between 12 and 16 years old. My practice is evidence based and trauma informed. I specialise in child-centred play therapy (CCPT) and person-centred therapy (PCT). In my work with teenage girls, I often draw from solution-focused, cognitive behavioural and sand tray therapeutic modalities. But my overall approach is rooted in person-centred theory. Significantly, research shows that the client-clinician relationship is the most important predictor of positive treatment outcomes, regardless of the approach.

My ideal client is someone who feels overwhelmed by anxiety, trauma, or emotional distress and is struggling to find clarity and balance in their life. They may be carrying the weight of past experiences, battling self-doubt, or feeling stuck in patterns that no longer serve them. Their most profound need is to feel heard, understood, and supported in a space where they can explore their emotions without fear of judgment. They seek tools to manage their thoughts, regulate their feelings, and regain control, ultimately striving for healing, personal growth, and a renewed sense of self.

Toddler Counsellors

What are the behavioural signs indicating a toddler might need counselling?

Common behavioural signs that a child may need counselling include high levels of emotional distress or anxiety, learning challenges, interpersonal conflict, anger, or social withdrawal. Any drastic changes in toddler behaviour or self-esteem can be indicative that a child may benefit from therapy. Seeing a therapist at the early stages of any behavioural changes can be most impactful on behaviour, as well as helpful to caregivers who may receive guidance on what symptoms to look for in their child in the future, even if therapy is not warranted at that time.

Can a two-year-old see a psychologist?

Children and adults of all ages can see psychologists and other forms of mental health professionals, such as counsellors, psychiatrists, and social workers. Families seeking therapy for their toddler should just be aware that any guidance they seek should come from a professional who has specific experience working with young children, as well as the specific modalities that are appropriate for young children, such as play therapy.

What is the most effective type of therapy for toddlers and preschoolers?

In general, play therapy is the most effective and common form of therapy for young children. Play therapy helps facilitate behaviour change by offering an age-appropriate way for children to express their emotions and develop more effective coping strategies. Toddlers with specific concerns may benefit from more specialised forms of therapy, such as Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) therapy for children with autism or Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) for toddlers in families in which there is significant parent-child relational conflict.

What happens during therapy sessions for toddlers?

What occurs in therapy sessions for toddlers depends on the therapeutic approach being used by the therapist. Most toddler therapists will use some form of play therapy in sessions to encourage toddler engagement. In play therapy sessions, children are encouraged to use toys within the therapy setting to express their emotions; subsequent responses by the therapist and/or family members can help guide toddler behaviour and behaviour change. Toddler therapy sessions can also involve family therapy or Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), which can help improve parenting behaviours and reduce strain on families.
