I have worked for a number of years with survivors of childhood sexual assault, adult sexual assault, intimate partner and other violence and also work with those who use violence.
My practice draws from feminist, attachment and trauma theory, and I use a number of different types of therapies in session depending on client need and what works for them.

Hi, I'm Patrick. I'm a clinical psychologist passionate about offering thoughtful, affirming care for people who are navigating life with depth, insight, and complexity. As a Queer person from a culturally diverse background, I know how hard it can be to find a therapist who truly understands identity, intersectionality, and the broader systems we move through. My practice is built on the belief that mental health support should feel safe, empowering, and free from judgment. I enjoy working with people who are self-reflective, curious, and ready to invest in their growth.

I love my work. I have been a practicing Psychologist for the last 13 years, working in addictions and trauma in public health. I have worked with people from a variety of backgrounds, which has given me a thorough understanding of the complexity of problems that people experience. My skill lies in helping people understand the issues they bring to therapy, so that we can work together on evidence based solutions to solve them. I also like to think that I bring a friendly and personable approach to this process, making therapy a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

I see psychotherapy as a collaborative journey of self discovery that can lead you to a more engaged and meaningful life. As we are all unique and complex beings, each of us will do this differently. Whether you feel stressed, overwhelmed, angry or depressed about some part of your life, as a therapist I will listen deeply, and hear what you say. Together, through our gentle conversations, we can find insights into your situation and identify the choices that are available to lead you to a better place. In my experience we all have the capacity to heal and grow in a caring and supportive environment.

Like a flower, we bloom in the right environment; in the play therapy room I work with empathy and acceptance to create a safe space for children and families in order for them to work through their issues and “grow”. I recognise the importance of family and offer assistance to parents and carers to work towards a safer, happier and more relaxed home environment in a strength-based way. Child-centred Play Therapy is a gentle, trauma-informed and neuro-affirming way of supporting children in their unique reactions to coping with daily life, big life events or trauma and attachment issues.

I bring four decades of experience in psychotherapy, counselling and art. I work with individuals, couples, and family members who seek to change their relationships with themselves and others. I aim to open possibilities to people who have little hope for change, struggle with depression, anxiety, and trauma symptoms, feeling overwhelmed and lost. This is often accompanied by counterproductive soothing behaviours such as substance use, addiction to gambling, gaming, sex, or screen use. Further, some clients may stay in relationships that deepen their belief that they cannot become the agents of their own lives.

Take a moment to check in with yourself and your body right now. What emerges? No matter what it is, know that you do not have to explore this alone. As human beings we are naturally self-protecting. Often this means that we attempt to bypass emotional discomfort in an effort to protect ourselves from pain. This avoidance tends to mean our suffering lingers and manifests in ways we have little control over such as; anxiety, depression, destructive relationships, unhealthy ways to cope and physical symptoms. I am here to help you safely feel into yourself, and release the parts that no longer serve you.

I am experienced in working with trauma such as domestic and family violence and sexual assault, as well as with gender and sexual identity issues.
It's OK to feel daunted by the prospect of counselling; sessions with me will be collaborative and will go at your own pace. There will be no judgment, you won't have to talk about anything that feels too painful until you are ready and I will not tell you what to do. Sometimes people think they have to be “crazy” or have mental health issues, or have experienced a severe trauma to see a therapist. My response is, if it’s important to you, then it’s worth talking about with someone. It doesn’t matter how small you think the issue is, talking about it can help.

I can work with most issues, and have a special interest and expertise in working with adult survivors of child sexual abuse.
We can all have times in our lives when things can seem unmanageable, whether it is within our family or close relationships, divorce or bereavement, or our health, our work or in coming to terms with difficult events that have happened either recently or in the past , which still don’t feel resolved. You are not alone, as human beings we all have difficult times. It is a brave decision to try to resolve those issues in the best way you can. A counsellor is not there to judge you, or to give you text book solutions. They are there to help and guide you towards the solution that is right for you.

Sexual Abuse Counsellors

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
