Family Therapy Counselling in Alexandria, NSW

Please get in touch to discuss how we can work together to best support your family.
Often children don’t have words to describe their experiences and feelings and instead reveal them through behaviours which can be misunderstood. They may get into trouble, be labelled, or disconnect. I work with children and families just like this. As a carer, reaching out for support can be the hardest step. I work closely with you and your child through Play Therapy which is relationship based therapy for children aged 3-12 years. Play is a child’s natural way of communicating and Play Therapy creates the environment where the therapist enters into a child’s world and understands the experience from their perspective.

I recognise the importance of family and offer assistance to parents and carers to work towards a safer, happier and more relaxed home environment in a strength-based way.
Play is how children learn and develop and also how they regulate their emotions and communicate with others. Where an adult might seek talking therapy, play therapy is a developmentally appropriate therapy for children to explore and deal with stuck thoughts or feelings. Play is a child's language.

It could be your relationships that aren’t working (partner, friends, family, boss, or colleagues).
I provide therapy that is uniquely suited to your nature and your needs. While, like other people, you might suffer from anxiety, depression, or trauma, how and why you suffer remains unique to you. I am curious about what is like to be you, and I am motivated to help you change experiences and behaviours that have become limiting for you.

Our sessions will be adapted to your needs and preferences, drawing from person-centred therapy, internal family systems therapy, somatic therapy, EFT tapping, polyvagal theory, attachment theory and more.
Take a moment to check in with yourself and your body right now. What emerges? No matter what it is, know that you do not have to explore this alone. As human beings we are naturally self-protecting. Often this means that we attempt to bypass emotional discomfort in an effort to protect ourselves from pain. This avoidance tends to mean our suffering lingers and manifests in ways we have little control over such as; anxiety, depression, destructive relationships, unhealthy ways to cope and physical symptoms. I am here to help you safely feel into yourself, and release the parts that no longer serve you.

I utilise a range of therapeutic modalities to suit individual needs, including a Trauma-Informed Approach (based on the Poly-Vagal Theory), Family Systems, Attachment, and Solution-Focused Therapy to facilitate each therapeutic journey with curiosity and compassion.
It is said that the trauma we experienced in our past can inform the way we learn to experience our current world. Not having the supports we needed along the way may have also lead us to cope in unhealthy ways, all while searching for ease and peace. Unique to us all, unresolved pain and disconnection can feel too complex or overwhelming to face by ourselves. For many, a range of bio-psycho-social issues develop, including anxiety, depression, loss of motivation, interpersonal conflicts or a negative view of self or the world. So how do we begin to identify and learn healthier ways of coping and reconnecting with the self?

Going to therapy takes guts. Often, it takes a person, or a couple, years to move from contemplating therapy to booking a first appointment. It’s not an easy process. But, what you get out of therapy is directly related to what you put into it. And I will match your dedication with mine. The process of healing and recovery is also one of becoming and realising. Therapy is self-development at its most satisfying. Yes, it takes courage, effort, and, often, a leap of faith. But, if you are ready to give yourself the gift of therapy, I am here to take that leap with you.

I've spent my counselling career in grief and loss, supporting clients through illness, bereavement, caring, and the various losses that come with major life transitions. I'm not into toxic positivity – sometimes life really is hard – but I can offer a space to laugh and cry and rage and vent, and find ways together to keep moving forward.

Family Therapy Counsellors
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
